Fuel Filters, need to change?

Well, I have a 00 Protege 1.8L LX, and I was gonna change the fuel filter on my car. I went to one shop and they told me to try the dealership...so I did. I went off to the dealership and told the guy I needed a new fuel filter for my car and he said..."No you don't." He told me the filter was built directly into our tanks and that I dont need to change it until I hit approx. 200,000km's. I thought this sounded funny, and that is why i am posting. To check with you people about this. Is this true, or not?
