fraying belt

well, i noticed todat that one of my serpintine belts is frayed and needs to be replaced. How much would labor run(est.) on replacing that? I'd do it myself, but it seemsto be a tight fit between the car and engine, and looks like more work than i feel like doing. Or am i just not seeing an easy way to do it?

Fraying on an outside edge? Have the dealer or a mechanic check your pulley alignment!

Just worn? Replace it! It really is 'that' easy. Unless you pay to have your w/w blades changed too, then, uh, never mind.

whic belt is it?? The alternator belt is the only that might give you trouble. The ps/ac belt is a cinch to do.

Question How?????

Hey. How did you replace the alterator belt? I have 99 Pro 1.8L and even after loosening the tension bolt the alternator still doesn't want to move. Are there additional bolts to be removed on the alternator?

Hahahhaha! I've been there. In fact, I was there on Boxing Day, on the side of the 401 (Ontario) when the alt. belt failed on my 02 1.6L. In the dark. With a single AAA battery flashlight. I spent about two hours on the side of the highway, and at one point had a s**t fit because I couldn't loosen the water pump (power steering pump?) to get that belt off before I installed the new alt. belt that I'd bought that afternoon.

There are actually two bolts locking the alternator in place. The first is the tensioner bolt, and the second is a bolt through the alternator mounting bracket that locks the tensioner in place. It's perpendicular to the tensioner bolt, and on the 1.6, the bolt head points at the passenger side inner fender, and is located just below and to the rear of the intake manifold.

I hope that makes sense,
Mark
