picking up my hat tomorrow.....

My question is: Why would you try and be cheap when it comes to engine oil? 4 Litres of Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic cost 22$ CDN (15$ US) and you only need this every 4 months approximately. Sometimes I get the urge to drive my car aggresively (near redline shifts) especially when confronted with curvy roads, and I don't want to be thinking When was my oil change, or I haven't checked my oil in a couple of weeks, I wonder how it is now.

You'll save a lot more money if you don't eat no fast food, etc. Don't go cheap on your car hehe

You can find Mobil 1 for $22 for 4 L?? Cheapest I can find it is for $26.95/4 L before taxes. Not that 4 bucks is a huge deal, but I haven't seen it any cheaper

Pro_fan,

I live in central Ohio. I've found Mobil 1 for $4.70 - $4.99 per quart around here at Pep-Boys, Advanced Auto Parts, Autozone and Wal-Mart. However, I found a 5-quart jug of Mobil 1 at Wal-Mart for $17.88.

Of course cost will vary by area, just giving you what I found for your reference.

Just changed my oil this morning (for the 1st time, at about 1250 miles).

Rolled up on the ramps, let it cool down a bit, then opened up the drain plug with one of those closeable oil pans underneath it.

SPLOOSH. Oil comes at an angle that makes it miss the oil container completely and get all over the ground and myself. Eventually I get the thing aimed right and not too much is spilling, but by now the container is covered in oil. I let it drain for what seems like a long time. It was dripping at maybe 1 small drop every 2 seconds by the time I re-plugged it. I didn't feel like waiting any longer. Undid the stock oil filter (which, interestingly, is NOT exactly the same as the replacement I got from Mazda), but it was too hot, so i let the car cool down for a few more minutes. Came back, got it off, screwed on the new filter by hand, and filled it up with 3 quarts of oil.

Then I measured the oil and it read FULL even though I had drained all the oil and only put in 3 quarts... strange. So I figure maybe it's because the car is up on the ramps. I bring the car down and let it cool off a while. Then I check it again and it's a little lower but it still seems full. To be safe, I put in another .5 quart, for a total of 3.5. Any idea as to why it would read so high? Is the dipstick just messed up, or did I not let the oil drain enough, or what?

BTW, I drained the oil about 15-20 minutes after a 45 minute trip at high speeds. Is that enough time for it to cool off?

Thumbs up first change

Yea, my dealer told me to come in a 3750 miles for my first change, but I think I'm going to do it at about half that.

My dealer REQUIRES me to come in for a 1000 km change. Then every 8000kms after that.....

And our cars take 3.3L of oil I thought......

The manual says 3.7 QUARTS (with filter change), which i guess comes out to around 3.3L. America is backwards and uses the retarded system of measuring things.

The reason for that number is to rotate your tires at the same time - I'm not sure what Mazda's engineers were thinking, but the rotation schedule for our tires is every 3750 miles, while the lowest oil change interval is every 5000 miles.

Personally, once I get to a good spot for doing changes at the 5000 mile rollovers I'm going to just rotate the tires on that schedule as well.

Thumbs up Yugomania

Hey Makaveli, where in Yugoslavia did you live? I've been to Slovenia and Croatia. Lots of cool cars there if you're into those bizarre things, which I am. I used to have an '87 Yugo which I LOVED until someone stole it and ran it into a tree. I honestly thought that thieves would have too much pride to steal a Yugo.
