For the past few months my car has been making a horrible screeching noise ... it has gotten more frequent as time passes. The noise occurs when driving at a low speed (parallel parking, turing corners, in stop and go traffic). It occurs frequently when I am braking and sometimes when I am not. I have taken my car to the dealership twice (late june and TODAY!!!). The first time they couldn't find anything wrong (but said they tightened the heat shield) and today they said it was the rear brakes and they needed servicing (although I had specified that the sound seems to be coming from the front drivers side). Since my car is used (a 99 protege) none of this is under warranty, it is starting to cost a fortune!

Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Half the time I think it is my brakes and the other half that it is something in the steering. I appreciate any help!

You say that you may think it has to do with steering and that it happens more at slower speeds... have you checked your power steering fluid level? Is it that kind of noise? Just a thought!!

No I am definitely not leaving the parking brake on!

Is it expensive to have the brake pads replaced as suggested by an earlier post?
