Engine Rattle when Cold - 2001 ES 2L and P5
#91
Thanks for the info, Chuck. I certainly appreciate it. Noticed in your side bar you've got an interesting array of speakers. I know the Canadian cars differ from the U.S. spec and was wondering the placement of your various speakers. I've got Infinity Reference 5x7 in the front doors and 6.5's in the back doors. Thanks again for the solenoid info.

Hi everyone. I am in the market for a brand new Mazda Protege with AT. After hearing about your complains about the engine rattle, I am wondering if this only applies to ES or LX as well. Since the deal right now is so good, I do not want to waste while I can still afford. Thank you.

The 'problem' is associated with Proteges / P5s with the 2.0 litre engine as I understand it. I have a P5 with AT and hear no such rattle, even when listening for it. Many others also report not hearing anything. Those that have reported the noise indicate it occurs in a very narrow RPM range, and is gone as soon as the engine gets close to operating tempatature (a few minutes at most). I also had read about this issue here before buying the car, but am glad I did not get scared away ... love the car....

Rattle
At one point in this discussion someone opened a thread with voting buttons to find out who has the problem with the rattle. What were the results like? I can't believe this is problem is a big issue. But who knows what the long term effects are!

I went to see if my car did this and I did hear a rattle. It was really quiet and I couldn't hear it when driving. But if I was stopped and reved the engine I could hear it. It only occured for 1/2 a second each time I hit the gas but would stop even if I kept my foot on the gas.

Start here: http://www.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/proble...hTopic=Vehicle , enter 2002 model year, then MAZDA make, then PROTEGE model, then ENGINE component.
If you wanted another forum to try to get this problem "noticed', how about a couple dozen more complaints at the NHTSA?? That ought to get Mazda's attention.....

Come on now, the "S" in NHTSA is for "Safety", and there is no evidence of any safety problem by any stretch. So I would think a few dozen complaints there would do nothing... do you really think NHTSA will give a rat's *** about an cold engine rattle at 2700 RPM, when , (just for example), dozens of reports of serious facial injuries, some resulting in blindness in one eye, have been reported to them related to air bag deployment in 1994-1995 Nissan Altimas (and there has been no recall on this)?

Anways the Protege has 3 complaints... Look at cars like Toyota Camary, Celica, and Civic... They have well over 20...

Um...
Ok...haven't been here in a while.
Glad the disconnect of the VCTS solenoid "fixed" the rattle...but I don't know if it really makes sense to do so. I mean...the VCTS is there to help make the car ULEV. I'll deal with a rattle to get better cold start fuel economy any day. Even if it gave a power boost...what do I care...it's a cold engine.
YMMV...and I don't want to take away from the good sleuthing. But just had to bring it up.

I'd like to offer 2 other explanations:
1. All these new engines have high idle revs on startup to compensate if the climate is especially cold. After a few seconds the idle falls down to where it should be- given the engine temp affected by the climate.
2. I've noticed a noise- not sure if I'd call it a rattle- when launching in 1st when the car is still cold. Goes away quickly except during winter when it takes a little while. Ironically I was already used to this... You see this is a trait my '90 Taurus SHO displayed. Whats the connection? The SHO uses a Mazda supplied 5-speed. In fact all Mazda manual trans seem to share this trait. And all are stiff shifters when the weather gets cold- more so than any other car I've ever driven. My only complaint about this car so far.
Anyway I'm probably way off base.
