I got my leftover 1990 Plymouth Acclaim from my mother, when I was 23, It must be nice to get a 1999 protege, or for that matter any car that is only three years old, when you are only 16

Red face pardon my previous barrage

I was at work, tired and agitated, so when I saw some newbie barging in (and a young one at that) claiming that he gained 20+ hp simply by removing the cat converter and the resonator when it's obvious that's not the case, and basically acting like he knows more than a trained Mazda mechanic (however poorly trained they are), I got a little ticked, so I replied much more harshly than I usually do.

that being said, I would agree with others to at least put the cat converter back, for environment and for your own legality sake.

And last thing, this site is THE most comprehensive Protege-related forum on the web, just about everything that you want to know about the Protege has been discussed here, or there are VERY experienced members that know the answers here. You are only 16, there are members here that have worked on cars longer than you've been in this world. LEARN about your car (like learn how to change oil yourself) before making changes to it, so you don't just believe some mechanic's bullshit and waste your HARD EARNED money on something that do no good, and regret later.

Welcome to the club

a young one at that
Age has nothing to do with it. There are a lot of old people who don't know jack about cars.

I am 19 and hate when people assume I don't know anything just because of my age.

And whats wrong with having your parents buy you a car. My parents bought me mine last month. My friends give me crap for it and I always reply, "What do you want me to do, not take a free car" they usually have no reply.

lol definately cant disagree there, id take a free car, but i also like being proud knowing i paid for both my cars at age 16 and 17 years old (bought and paid for my p5 when i was 16, now bought my SE-R at 17) kinda nice, though expensive

it does for premdrumusr, he's only 16, and unless he was raised in a garage/he has a mechanic for a dad, this is his first year getting truly involved with operation of a car (assuming he didn't do any underage driving ) obviously he'll know a lot more than most 'average joes' if he stays interested and starts learning from the get go

nothing wrong until you start to NOT appreciate what you've been given, and get this "I don't care what happens to this car, I didn't pay for it" attitude, and start modifying purely for modifying's sake, without logic and reason....

5SpeedP5, not sure how you paid for TWO cars at age 17. You either work so much that you hardly get any time off or you're getting a HUGE allowance. I hope it's the former that gave you all this money at 17....

Well if you really want to know. I was born around a garage and grew up in one. My grand father owned his own shop until he passed away 2 years ago. My father has many vehicles including a Superformance 427 cobra him and I built from the ground up. I may not know too much about my car but who cares?!? That's what I pay people for, so I don't have to spend my time working on a car and I can be a kid. and to whoever told me I should at least know how to change my own oil, I do and I would if i wanted to. But I'd rather not. I paid for the car, I pay for the oil changes and mods, and well... my parents sit back and watch. See everyone learns from their mistakes. And while i probably shouldn't have taken out the cat. converter would you like to talk to my brother with his Trans am? The exhaust guy did the same thing with his trans am. And well, its his car, his life, and all you green freaks... if your so concerned about my brother's car or mine, go buy an electric!

HubbMP5 -
My mistake in replying to you as if you were the 16 year old; I was hurriedly writing a last-minute response to who I thought was premdrumusr (?).
But, my apology ends there...

Your "flames" come only from the burning flatulence of your mind; snide commentary on suggested "personal goals" cross the line into the bounds of my psyche, of which I am the sole possessor.

You also suggest that I not have concerns about noise pollution if I frequent an auto enthusiast board.. Why not, this is the General discussion Page, which I do peruse for factual information that is useful to normal, blase' drivers such as myself. The forum has additional venues for folks to discuss their mods, racing, etc.- you don't see me in there giving people a hard time. However, I am offended by da' kid glibbly admitting his lack of concern for the world around him by employing such low-tech changes to his car. Pollution (noise/air) impacts people and other organisms, perhaps in ways which we don't even recognize, so why exacerbate it. Furthermore, the tone of his post seemed more along the lines of self-praise, which in and of itself necessitates humbling.

You need to be corrected w/ regards to fact: I never resorted to name-calling in my first post, unless you consider recognizing 16 year olds as being children, derogatory. You, on the other hand, hypocritically deride me in both of your posts (though I understand my inadvertently calling YOU a child would indeed be offensive)

BTW, niceness isn't my forte'. Much like the effects of art, I am concerned only in causing some passion, some movement. It doesn't matter if I made you angry or happy - only that I made you think.

Oh, everyone else should should compensate for your lack of responsibility. Remember, i have not removed the cat. conv. - you did! And i would love to have an electric car, quietly zipping down the road.

BTW, are you a liar or just highly confused? In you last post you stated you paid for the car, in you first post you claimed your parents did. You also admit no wrench-pulling knowledge, but then claim building a Cobra "ground-up", as well as all the mods on the ES

jesus, can we start a romper room thread and re-direct kids there?

Are you saying YOU don't care? because if you don't care about the car that YOU supposedly paid for (didn't you say your parents paid for it in the first post?), no one will, especially those mechanics that you paid to do work on.

That's what I pay people for, so I don't have to spend my time working on a car and I can be a kid.
Glad you still want to have some fun while you're young. But are you sure those people that you're paying to work on your car knows what they're doing? I hope they are. tuning a 1.8L DOHC 4 cylinder is completely different from tuning a pushrod V8 your brother has in the Trans Am.

that being said, may I suggest you to check out the forced induction section of the forum, and read up on turbocharging your 1.8L. The general consensus among the knowledgable people on this forum is that turbo is the BEST route in making significant power gain from this motor.

good luck

"Your 'flames' come only from the burning flatulence of your mind; snide commentary on suggested 'personal goals' cross the line into the bounds of my psyche, of which I am the sole possessor."

-I was merely demonstrating to you the effects you the very same meathod you chose to employ in your initial response. By your reaction, I can tell it worked.

"You also suggest that I not have concerns about noise pollution if I frequent an auto enthusiast board.. Why not, this is the General discussion Page, which I do peruse for factual information that is useful to normal, blase' drivers such as myself. The forum has additional venues for folks to discuss their mods, racing, etc.- you don't see me in there giving people a hard time."

-Even though I agree with most of your points, I simply differ with you on this one. Noise "pollution" is temporary... even fleeting. Its a matter of taste and opinion, not ecology.

"However, I am offended by da' kid glibbly admitting his lack of concern for the world around him by employing such low-tech changes to his car. Pollution (noise/air) impacts people and other organisms, perhaps in ways which we don't even recognize, so why exacerbate it. Furthermore, the tone of his post seemed more along the lines of self-praise, which in and of itself necessitates humbling."

-Actually, he was merely uninformed. That what the board is here for: to help spread information. As a result of MY passing formation and opinion in an intelligent and constructive manner, he has taken the proper course of action. All your self-righeousness was likely to do was breed an environment of defiance.

"You need to be corrected w/ regards to fact: I never resorted to name-calling in my first post, unless you consider recognizing 16 year olds as being children, derogatory."

-In the context you used it, it was meant to be insulting, and you damn well know it. While this wasn't 'name calling' per-se, the level of maturity remains the same. We'll call it "Deliberate use of terminology in order to incite feelings of negativity or insult".

"You, on the other hand, hypocritically deride me in both of your posts (though I understand my inadvertently calling YOU a child would indeed be offensive)"

-I apologize. It was indeed hypocritical.

"BTW, niceness isn't my forte'. Much like the effects of art, I am concerned only in causing some passion, some movement. It doesn't matter if I made you angry or happy - only that I made you think."

-And to that end, you prove your ignorance despite my best efforts to assist you and your goals... and the fact that I actually agree with your position. It was only your delivery I disagree with. Check your private message box.. you'll find more words of wisdom. The passion you INFLICT in others in this way is only likely to breed hatred against yourself and, in turn, result in the trampling of the things you and I hold so dear.

Translated: you intend on offensive behaviour, therefore you should be excluded from the same commentary you attempt to inflict on me

Oh contrare, check the literature. Noise pollution affects the communication of our avian and reptilian friends; it may even be painful (especially for canines). The "Edge effects" of human activities near functioning ecosytems indeed includes noise as a factor - it does tend to frighten and scare reclusive species, usually instigating them to move elsewhere. Incidentally, humans have been known to endure deafness - do pedestrians matter to you?

-Actually, he was merely uninformed. That what the board is here for: to help spread information.

The kid is looking for something else here - probably acceptance.

- As a result of MY passing formation and opinion in an intelligent and constructive manner, he has taken the proper course of action. All your self-righeousness was likely to do was breed an environment of defiance.

Speaking of self-righteous - Oh never mind, you obviously do not see the irony of your own self-adoration here.

-In the context you used it, it was meant to be insulting, and you damn well know it. While this wasn't 'name calling' per-se, the level of maturity remains the same. We'll call it "Deliberate use of terminology in order to incite feelings of negativity or insult".

I call it "The Truth"

"You, on the other hand, hypocritically deride me in both of your posts (though I understand my inadvertently calling YOU a child would indeed be offensive)"

-I apologize. It was indeed hypocritical.

Thanks - Unconditionally accepted!

"BTW, niceness isn't my forte'. Much like the effects of art, I am concerned only in causing some passion, some movement. It doesn't matter if I made you angry or happy - only that I made you think."

-And to that end, you prove your ignorance despite my best efforts to assist you and your goals...

I can take care of my own problems
-
and the fact that I actually agree with your position.

How refreshing

-It was only your delivery I disagree with.

Deal with it! Content over form

-Check your private message box.. you'll find more words of wisdom.

More babble, i presume, but good point, we'll go toe to toe in the PM. But don't continue to flatter yourself; I'm still very
unimpressed

The passion you INFLICT in others in this way is only likely to breed hatred against yourself and, in turn, result in the trampling of the things you and I hold so dear.

I am not seeking popularity, merely spreading the word. Had you not taken it upon yourself
to flame me then i wouldn't be forced to waste my time with you. And if you MUST hate something, by all means, let it be me - at least I can defend myself

Man are you ever missing the point. I wasn't speaking for myself. I do not hate you. I'm simply saying that this WILL be the result of your ranting at some people. Again, let me reiterate, I do not hate you.

Are you asking for a hug?

We can put down the foils and end the mental fencing, or we can continue in the PM. It's ok to hate me, though. If you haven't had enough, I could certainly dredge up quite a few reasons for you to feast upon. BTW, care to comment on the reality of noise pollution?
