Summer Project- Tuning my 2002 Protege ES for SPEED and Cool Factor (LMAO)

Me and my buddy have some summer plans of doin up our cars hardcore with the new jobs we just landed. I drive a 2002 Protege ES and he's got a 98 Passat 1.8t.

Although my buddies car is quicker then mine, I always manage to take him off the line (I run AT and he's a 5 speed) and if I can manage to stay ahead until his measly turbo kicks out then I'm usually ok (yeah he gains on me but usually we hit the finish b4 he passes) Anyways, thats off topic, we wanna get our rides goin quick, not super record breaking fast but we wanna be able to put down all those cheap ricers and muscle cars on the road when they start thinkin they're tough.

Anyways, I did research on turbocharging the 2.0 and I found a kit for a Garrett T25 which seems like a good bet, the entire kit is being sold here: http://www.turbo-kits.com/protege_turbo_kits.html

and I just wanted 2 check with u guys for feedback, also, for other mods:

- as far as cold air intakes are concerned, how do the K&N ones stand up 2 the competition?

- for a new exhaust I came across the brand Skunk2 that seems somewhat expensive, so I was wondering if anyone has any experience with them?

- I was thinking of installing a carbon fiber hood as well, to give it not only some weight reduction but also provide it with a scoop for airflow. How much weight will be removed approx replacing the stock hood with carbon fiber or should I save a bit of money and get a standard hood with a scoop (I need a new hood anyways, stone chips are gettin ugly)

If anyone else has any ideas for my summer project let me know.

Hold off on the intake and exhaust until you decide if you will turbo or stay n/a.

Put together a final plan first. Then buy parts/kits to meet that final objective. The turbo may come witht he new intake. A turbo needs a bigger exhaust than n/a...

A lot of people spend money on stuff that doesn't work with the final outcome.

My $.02 worth.

well I'm pretty sure i wanna go with a turbo and so far the T25 seems like a good bang for your buck, still deciding if I wanna spend a bit more and go with the Dual Ball Bearing, prolly just for durability purposes. The turbo will be my first engine upgrade, then I can work from there with ECU, exhaust, etc etc

Another kit I found is here: http://www.prostreetonline.com/buy/t...bo_kits/mazda/
For quick reference it comes with:

1 Garrett T25 Turbo w/internal wastegate @ 6psi
1 High Nickel Composite Cast Exhaust Manifold
1 Downpipe
1 Fuel Pressure Regulator
1 MAP Unit
1 Oil Return Line and Fitting
1 Air Filter w/piping
1 Injection Control Unit w/Turbo Timer
1 Injector Interface Block w/Injectors
1 Blow Off Valve
1 High flow intercooler w/mounting hardware, pressure tubes, rubber hose connections and clamps
Comes with instructions and everything necessary to install! Kit is a complete bolt-on!

As for your intake question I think you should do what I did, and email/call, Fujita, and ask them to start producing a Fujite F5 kit for our car. At the moment they only make it for the Mazde 3 and 6. But, if they start making it for the Protege I'm definitely getting one. I just put one on an RSX, money well spent. Plus if you go to somewhere like optionimports, you can get it for around $215.

As for other mods, I would just hold off and see what you're going to end up doing.

Anyone know if I opt for this kit as well, will I need to upgrade the stock 03' ECU?
-On that site, it's saying for +$250, it will come with Greddy emanage, Greddy Turbo Timer, and a walbro fuel pump. So, the question is if I opt for that can leave the stock ECU in place, and not buy an EMS?

Also, anyone know how much PSI is the T25BB capable of?

turbo-kits.com is 100% junk. Steer clear. Save your money for REAL mods....and fyi, a CF hood isn't a performance mod. The weight savings are mild but there is NO gain to be had from having a scoop. Maybe an evo-style opening would help more than anything. It would allow the heat from the exhaust up front to vent out before soaking the motor.

What turbo comes with that kit? It doesn't specify, all I see is "# Full ball bearing turbocharger (used in WRC Race Cars)"

T28.
But it has a really nice intake and cast manifold so it wont crack but will still spool at 2k.

The Hiboost kits come with IHI vf-series turbo's...they are VERY reliable and capable. MAM uses the garret series of turbo's.

p.s. If it helps HiBoost just released a turbo kit for the Mazda3 2.3L that made 508whp....yes, WHP with nothing added to the kit except rods. Protege's don't hit 500whp no matter how much you throw at them. Juan is on top of his game.

Hiboost's site is currently down, I checked out the kits on MAM, and they look Dangerous! I really want to turbo my pro. What kit would you recommend for an 03' protege ES? And what would I need to do to get it done, money is not a factor, provided i'm not spending 10K on a turbo

Originally I was planning to go the cheap route, (and I still might), I found the complete factory turbo off the Mazdaspeed Protege for $650, but I'll need the ECU as well, and they have 5 different ones for the 2.0 Manual transmission.

Any help with either option is greatly appreciated.

MAM hasn't been the most reputable actually. I know some things about them (him) that would keep me from EVER giving them money.

The problems with turbos on proteges is our weak rods and poor ecu. A hiboost kit will come with a haltech F10X fuel computer (8 wire install) and has been proven the most reliable kit on the market. I've only heard of 1 hiboost car with a stock engine blowing. Keep the boost at what he sets it at and you'll be good to go all day. HiBoost is also cheaper iirc.

Check Protegegarage.com for best pricing.

Hey guys, thanks for tge input. I didnt mean to imply the CF hood as an actual performance upgrade, I also plan to do a few visuals and it was kinda a blurry spot in between. (And yeah, the hoods I've been looking at have Evo-style openings)

I think I'll save my money and go for the Hiboost kit. the MAM turbos seem very scary, like somthin I'd use if I wanted to destroy my engine. GT30R-HOLY CRAP...

Anyways, I think I'll start saving for the hiboost and then find out what kind of exhaust i should get to compliment that specific kit.
