Some weird things after Ebay Intake Install

Hey guys, i posted a few days ago about how i installed the cheap ebay intake. Half a day later after i finished the install and put the bracket in to hold on, the CEL came on.

Not only did the CEL come on, but the clutch started feeling all crappy because the intake was hittting the clutch fluid reservoir near the throttle body.

I checked all the connections and everything LOOKS okay, for now i used a rope to the the intake pipe to the chassis near the passenger side headlight so it would stop hitting everything.

The CEL is still goin on, and im not sure what's the problem. There is that one little thing that is normally mounted on the stock intake up towards the windshield. The instructions for the ebay intake say to ziptie that thing in an upright position so it functions how its supposed to. How similar to the stock position does it need to be? It's pretty upright right now, but not perfect, so that might be the CEL. The bottom tube coming out of it is just flapping around. Is that supposed to be attached anywhere?

Not only is the CEL remaining on, but the idle is so rough sometimes that the car almost stalls.

ANy help is appreciated guys, thanks!

The intake hitting the master cylinder doesn't adequately explain your clutch problem IMHO. The fluid reservoir that the intake's hitting is actually the BRAKE master cylinder; the clutch m/c shares the same fluid, but it's mounted lower. You would probably experience BRAKE problems before you have clutch problems. What is your clutch doing anyways?

However, the fact that it's hitting your brake m/c is pretty scary. Get that fixed!

That "little thing" is the purge solenoid valve, part of the evaporative emissions system, and that "bottom tube" is supposed to attach to a fitting on the back of the throttle body. Purge solenoid valve disconnected = evap emissions system compromised = CEL (actually MIL, using proper terminology). No vacuum hose attached to t/b = big vacuum leak = MIL and engine idles rough. The PCM may also be throwing a code due to problems with the MAF and/or IAT sensor positions, and the vacuum leak may also make the PCM throw a MAF code. You should get the PCM scanned to let you know where to start looking for problems.

Good luck!

Two questions about your CEL:
1. When you reset the ECU, after you disconnected the negative batt cable, did you pump the brakes a couple of times to drain the charge in the caps? This step erases the old data on the ECU.

2. After you hooked the battery cable back up, did you start the car and let it idle for 10 min or so? This is the step that actually re-sets the ECU.

Carguycw- The clutch feels like really rattly and unsolid....and when i added the rope to stop the intake from moving, it almost completely goes away. How come the bracket that came with the intake sucks so badly?! How can i secure the intake better without using a fricking rope?

Eggynatey- oops, didnt do either of those things! Good lookin out!

If it's that bad you might want to reinstall the stock airbox and see if the problems you noticed goes away. I think you should check what carguycw said first though.

best solution for the bracket is to get "L" brackets from home depot... 4" -6" works best depending where you mount it... i mount it onto the engine... extremely safe that way...

in the pic just up top of the yellow tube is the MAF and to the left is the place i mounted the "L" bracket..

Cool, fixed the CEL because of that solenoid vacuum hose leak, and now all i have to worry about is the brace. Thanks guys!
