some interesting info about intakes

I talked to Mark from Tri Point about several of their parts for the 2.0L Proteges including cams, exhausts, cam gears, turbo and more.
He said that he will have more cam gears available in 2-3 wks for $299/set.
He said the most power is in the cams, cam gears, and exhaust system. I then asked "what about the air intake system?". He said that the is ZERO power increase in after market intakes. He said they dynoed the injen CAI and it only gave 1 whp. I find it VERY hard to believe. Several people on this board has dynoed their car after installing a CAI and gained 4-5 whp. I do not understand! I think their dyno is messed up! They also have some strange torque figures for the turbo Protege.

There was thread about it-torgue is in N/m, not lb/ft
As for cold air intake....I am not sure, personally I think that those 3 letters(CAI) are overused......But I believe that opening up intake helps to get most out of the cams and turbo.

Edited:
Unfortunately no dyno is run under perfect conditions, there could be variance of few hp even among brand new stock cars, one dyno cannot be compared to another and last thing-I am out of ******' orange juice so I cannot make myself a screwdriver.

they are right about the power gains. if you don't compliment your intake with headers and exhaust then you will see minimal gains. I only got 2 extra whp and 3 extra ft/lbs with my CAI.... I had it dyoned vs stock air box... so it is truw.

Well, here's what I think, and I may be way off base, but I'm just musing...

If the throttle is wide open, then maybe some more air can get into the engine, and the horsepower should be improved. If the throttle is not all the way open, then it becomes the bottleneck, and it doesn't matter much how restrictive the upstream plumbing is.

However, since a CAI gives a more direct path to the throttle, I would expect throttle response to be a little better. When you ask for more air, it can flow straight in, rather than widing through a bunch of tubes and boxes to get there.

Improving throttle response is a way of improving performance, even though you can't measure it in terms of horsepower increase.

Also, it sounds cool.
