Question question about tranny

written else where but thought I would ask, my P5 has 2800 miles or so and is going back to the dealer thursday mostly cause they couldn't "duplicate" my cars problem before. The tranny grinds upshifting to second frequently but not always, I'm not the only driver of this car and has happend to the other as well. Also shifting to reverse has always been difficult, recently I discovered that if I let the clutch 1/2 way out it will go into reverse.... what up with that?!?

Thnks for the links, guess I'm not the only one. It seems odd still that the trany is so stubborn. It takes away from the fun when doing some spirited driving. Still the car is FUN! My biggest gripe about the reverse thing is I nearly got hit by an SUV backing up and not seeing me. No one was behind me and It sucked to have to fight with the tranny and hold the horn down while screaming at the top of my lungs!

Reluctance of the shift to go into reverse is, believe it or not, normal. It's mentioned in the owners manual. Prevents you from shifting from 5th to R if you're a little fuzzy and have lost count.

Your shift up from 1st doesn't belong, however. Complain bitterly.

I have a new one too. You're right. They really are a lot of fun.

will complain. this sight is great lots of info and from some of what I've read I'm glad there are multiple dealers around the Portland metro area so that I won't have to settle for subpar service. Also realized corksport is right here as well, gonna have to go check them out. I really still can't believe they tried to idiot proof the tranny in that manner my 2 prevouse Mazdas didn't do this, Oh well minnor gripe over all I guess.

Well, not so sure about that. My 91 Protege had the same "feature" of releasing the clutch before dropping to R.

I don't think I've seen a fully-synchronized transmission that wasn't idiot proofed in this manner. Better to hear a grind or get some resistance than to accidentaly drop into reverse and lose the tranny (I had a friend actually hit someone's transmission the other day, trucker dropped it in the middle of a highway, funny stuff).

I'm having this problem too. But mine didn't start until the dealership replaced my clutch. Goes away once the car is warmed up although the action is still pretty stiff. I'm not really fond of this transmission anyway but it is pretty much the best feeling in its class. I really like the action on the Mini.
