Ok, just in case I do decide to change my mind about an engine swap, if I turbo my 1.6 like Biknman, how much hp do you think I can achieve? Just leaving myself some options.

Biknman, I know your turbo is custom-made and that it cost you around $2K(give or take a few), but could you refer me to the guy who hooked you up? I might do the same.

This all goes back to how much you are willing to spend. With custom bottem end work, forged internals, a pnuematic valvetrain, and blueprinting-balancing you could come in around 600 or 700 whp, however you would spend more than you did to get the car in the first place. Realisticly the 2.0 can make between (approx) 170 and 190 or so whp on the stock ECU and fuel system. I do not even know the power of your engine to start with (90 something?) You should tell yourself "I want 150 hp at the wheels" or something like that and then figure out what needs to be done.

The 1.6 has 105hp if I'm not mistaken. I want atleast 150hp, more if I could. I'm willing to spend about $3K-$4K. Do I have to customize the whole thing or are there kits available? My real question is how much can the 1.6 handle?

There was a thread somewhere on here for a turbo manifold for a 1.6L. Try a search. Other than that it will need to be mostly custom. Your budget seems to be pretty good to pick up the 50 or so hp. I would guess that you could nail your goal with about 6 to 7psi. It would be safe to get some kind of fuel management, such as a haltec E36K or the cheaper and simpler Greddy E-mangage(just two examples, there are more) Your stock internals should do fine with that. I don't really know anything about the amount your engine can handle. I don't really know much about your engine all together, but I hope that helped.

Here is a site to contact that will have some good info on a custom setup: http://www.iboost.org/cgi-bin/mycart...pl?uname=GUEST

i guess its me, but even for a small boost application, if i ever built one, its having a stand alone and being tuned with a wideband. im not going to blow engines because i didnt want to spend an extra couple hundred bucks after already shelling out a couple grand.
I dont think you get the point of most people. Its not the money for the stand alone ecu that gets them, its that they dont know how to install and tune a new ecu.
I for one have no problem doing cams, headers or even a turbo, but when it comes to tuning a car and playing with timing/fuel ratios???? I dont even have a clue where to start.
If I was willing to pay someone to install a turbo, then maybe I would pay someone to tune a stand alone, but I want to do things myself. The problem is that I dont know anyone in my city that would even have a clue about tuning a mazda, and would just be guessing.
Now, if someone started selling a stand alone that plugged right into our harness, that had a program from a tuned protege, then maybe we could start talking....
Hell if someone had a new ecu now, that I could plug into my exising protege, I would get one now.

I fixed that P2k. I didn't mean legal, I meant custom. Not sure why I typed that.
