MP5 Exhaust choices

I am new to this scene, so excuse any silly questions. I am looking to get modest power gains and just learn from this, and have fun with the car. Right now, I have only installed an Injen CAI, minimal gain but sounds cool. Now I am looking to purchase a catback exhaust for my MP5. I have done some reading and I am looking at two at this point. Any suggestions for others as well?

1) Racing Beat
2) SR Motorsports

The SR exhaust claims more power gain than the Racing Beat. Has anyone had any experience with that exhaust? I am looking for decent power gain, but not TOO loud. I guess I want a nice deep tone, not too tinny. I have seen a lot of happy Racing Beat users on the forum, but nothing on the SR. Is it real loud?

Any advice or input? TIA!

You have a couple more options besides the two mentioned. I have never heard any RB user complain about the sound. I have heard that it is a nicy deep tone, that isn't noticable with the windows up except at full throttle. I have not heard much at all about the SR exhuast.

Greddy makes a full cat-back as well...Big *** tip, but suprisingly it is said to be the quietest exhuast available for a P5. If you are looking for gains, The Team Moon exhuast, which also has a big *** tip, has the largest gains I have seen, and they also supply a dyno and sound clip. They are pretty new to the Protege scene but have an army of happy MR-2 owners...The site is www.teammoonexhaust.com

Talking

That teammoon exhaust looks nice. I hadnt seen that one yet. I am now seriously looking at that one and the other two mentioned previously. Thanks for the info, Installshield!

Anyone else have any opinions? Perhaps someone has the SR motorsports exhaust?

mazdaspeed exhaust
racing beat
SR
teammoon
HKS axle back
Racitve cat-back

I think APEX'i is developing one for the p5 also.

Of the ones I listed above I think the mazdaspeed is the worst as far as gains. The HKS for an axle back supposedly is really nice as far as pwr gains and sound are concerned and HKS is a name you can trust. Racing Beat has made alot of happy customers here and are occasionally on ebay for 200-250. mazdaspeed exhaust are always 200+shipping on ebay. and I picked up the Ractive cat back on ebay brand new for 107 plus shipping. Ill post when I get the ractive one installed on the sound/look and performance.

Havent seen or heard much on the teammoon one so just data to go by there.

i think the racing beat's on ebay are the "Sport Exhaust" offered by Mazda...the full cat-back that racing beat has retails at like $450, so i cant believe that to be true.....

the mazdaspeed is only an axle-back

there is also a bosal system that is pretty nice, and a borla system

if i remember correctly the borla has a weird *** looking tip, but it comes with an optional silencer, which is basically just a piece of the stock exhaust that you put inside the muffler tip.....

Yeah, post again as soon as you get it installed. I'd like to know how it sounds and performs... I'd like to get a cat-back exhaust but my main priority is noise - I'm not fond of loud sounding aftermarket exhausts. Any suggestions out there?? (low noise, high HP gains)

you probably want to look into the greddy system if you are looking for quiet, thats a nice system very quiet for the big opening, not a lot of resonance (sp?) so that may be what you are looking for

If cash doesnt matter so much I agree with going with the Greddy system. Between them bosal and racing beat I think they are the best for performance and the Greddy will have the best appearance and the quietest lowest sound.

I went with ractive because of the price I got and the tubing was a slightly larger diameter which I wanted because my intake tubing is 3in.

The racing beats I saw on ebay were the cat backs, the starting price was like 180 or somethin and the 2 or 3 I have seen on there sold for between 225 and 250 plus shipping which is definately possible on ebay as per my ractive purchase example.

I dont like the mazdaspeed exhaust systems (either) because they use the smallest diameter tubing and from what I have heard produce the least amount of performance boost.

A note though; I havent seen one of the racing beat systems on ebay for about 3 or 4 weeks now, that was the one I was originally going to go with but I waited to long and didnt get one of the ones on ebay, ended up with the ractive which I am just as happy with for price, but am waiting to see and hear it in person installed.

What's the diameter of the Greddy cat-back system??
And do you know any links, sites, or reviews/tests that has compared the pros and cons of different manufacturer's exhaust systems on a Protege? Thanks again!

The Greddy is between 2 1/4 and 2 1/2 I think. In my opinion you get what you pay for, I think the quality of the Greddy is great.

You can also go the custom route. This way, there are way more mufflers to choose from. Who knows, piping from a muffler shop might be cheaper. I'd personally get some custom piping done isntead as you have more freedom in choosing what the pipe diameters you want, the shop you want to goto, the mufflers you want, etc..

you get what you pay for to a certain extent. The exact same xhaust I got off ebay new for 107 matched the part number of the full catback system from ractive that listed between 4 and 450.

Again, though, I do believe Greddy is the best system out there unless you can find a Fujitsobu system and the only place I have ever seen carry fujitsobu for sale in the US is boomplustoys.com

Fujitsubo is one of the most regarded exhaust companis in the JDM but havent really allowed outsourcing to the US yet which is why i was surprised to see them on that site.

www.protege5online.com

I used this site for reference as to what is available for the p5 and they carry the bosal, thermal, racing beat and greddy systems for comparison. all their prices include shipping I believe.

The problem with custom piping is that most muffler shops do not mandrel bend their piping so you are losing potential HP which is important because the cat-back is only adding about 5-8 hp.

ive been thinking about try to hook up with teammoon to see if they will do a group buy or anything, the reason i like them is that its cheaper than most others, its got nice dyno numbers, and they even provide sound clip which sounds pretty damn nice. If there is some interest i'll try to hook something up, but its not that expensive to start with, only 329, but I want under $300
