I installed the MP3 Muffler on my 2000 ES. With the addition of a K&N drop-in filter, I was able to feel a difference in power. The sound was improved- gave it a little growl- but did not make it loud. I bought the muffler and filter from Mazda Motorsports for under $200 (us).
I don't know if the MAZDASPEED Exhaust is different, but if it is, it is probably a greater power gain.

I'm in the same boat as you.
I'm on the verge of purchasing a Mazdaspeed exhaust myself.
I think the consensus around this forum is to go with Mazdaspeed or Racing Beat which is a cat-back which = more $$$. That's pretty much what finalized my decision.

The only CANADIAN source that I am aware of is going to the dealer and ordering one. It's roughly $397 plus taxes. My dealer gives a discount on accessories for the first year to people who by their cars from them which works out to about $319.

Pretty good I guess considering that the American on-line stores sell them for $195USD ($283CAD) and that doesn't count shipping, taxes, duties and other wonderful things or government wants to bless us with (free trade my a$$!).

If anyone else has a solution for a CANADIAN source for this part, please let us know. Thanks!

From what I thought the exhuasts where for the most part the same. The tip on the MSP car is a little more oval/or bigger I think and has Mazdaspeed enscribed on it rather than the MP3's Racing Beat writing...

FWIW I think Racing beat made all three of these exhuasts. They sell a full cat-back which was not on either of the production cars, a MP3 axle back, and a Mazdaspeed axle back. In another thread I read that the MP3's axle back has been superceeded by the MSP axle back, and once supplies run out on the MP3's you will get the Mazdaspeed's...This is still confusing to me. If you are interested research some older threads with the search button. There were a couple of different axle backs available, like the dealer brochure's "sport exhuast" which I thought was the MSP version...Just pointing some of this out...Correct anything that is wrong, and I bet some of it might be...

the 'Mazdaspeed muffler' dealers sell as an accessory is NOT the same as the Racing Beat muffler installed on the Mazdaspeed Protege.

the Mazdaspeed muffler is in fact a Bosal exhaust that's MADE IN SOUTH AFRICA. And it is A LOT louder than the racing beat mufflers on the MSP or the MP3.

RE: Dealer Options
The Mazda dealers have never offered the Racing Beat unit as a dealer option, they have always used a different supplier for these units (Bosal).

RE: Mazda MP3 C08 Unit...
We did make a few extra units for Mazda, but these were to be used for warranty, accidents, damage, etc...

RE: 3-piece exhaust (cat-back) ON racingbeat.com
the axle-back muffler piece will not bolt-up to the stock flange on the Protege connecting pipe. Our muffler is only intended to bolt-up to our cat-back components...

They are quote from an e-mail I sent to Racing Beat earlier about whether I can get an axle-back only piece from them for a direct bolt-on to the Protege...

Don't waste your money. Go to your local exhaust shop and do custom. My MSP is getting done next week with 3 inch from the down pipie back. That Mazdaspeed exhaust is choking my car to death.

Its the down pipe mostly, but yes with your turbo a larger diameter exhuast would not hurt...Your car only has a Mazdaspeed muffler (axle back made buy Racing Beat) too I thought, it does not have Racing Beat's full aftermarket cat back...
