Exclamation K&N Intake

Just thought I'd pass on this information on a possible K&N intake for the Protege/Protege 5 2.0L engine. You might already know about it but who knows!

Dear Customer,

We are currently developing a Typhoon kit for your vehicle. I have no release date yet. Please check back in 60-90 days for a possible update. Also you can check our web site at www.knfilters.com it is updated every Monday with new products.

More competition in the intake world should make the other intake manufactures slowly drop their prices.

I sure hope so. I don'r know about you guys but the range in prices is pretty amazing. In Canada you can get a Ractive Intake for about $125 CDN or and Injen for about $450. OUch!

K&N used my wifes Protege5 for final fitment of their kit.

I would expect the kit to be available within a month from now, but you never know.

She will of course be receiving one for free for her trouble.....Ill be sure to post how the car feels after the install.

The gentleman who worked with us said it will be like most of their FIPKs, customers will have the option to run it as a short ram, or attach the extension on it that places the filter in the fender well, thus making it a true CAI. If they dont take pics of it for their site, I will take pics of it installed in our car when we have it shipped to us.

Just took a look at K&N's site. I find it interesting that they are claiming increases of up to 26hp with their FIPKs (fuel injection performance kits).

When Injen installed their CAI on my car, I got an increase of 5hp. They said the best they've seen is about 12-14hp increases with the Celica GTS because of it's high compression.

I last spoke with my contact at K&N about 2 weeks ago. I guess they had to do more testing for their CARB certification and were looking at a June release date. As soon as we get our free kit, I will be sure to take pictures and also comment on the installation, sound, and performance gains.

This is probably because K&N makes intakes for everything, not just late-model imports. The stock intakes on many 80's domestic cars were restrictive pieces of dung. Replace one of these intakes with a cone filter, and the car wakes up. The 26 hp claim is probably for a late 80's TPI V-8 Camaro or Firebird, and it is probably accurate

The one nice thing about stock parts that really, really suck is that they make the car respond REALLY well to simple mods. We are not this lucky

Exactly.....

I saw the dyno graph for the test Protege5 and they only got about 4hp peak gains......

But on a 2.5L Mercury Cougar (another car I own) their kit got close to 10HP to the wheels.

Any updates? An aftermarkret intake is at the top of my mod list, but I want to consider all my options before choosing one. Thanks.
