the only way your car ISN'T making that sound is if its NOT RUNNING>......even if you have the stock intake on it....but the sound is so muffled from the stock intake you can't really notice it unless you have your hood up....your head in the engine bay and someone revving the engine. ONCE you turn that key off....and there in no longer an exhaust note.....your engine continues to turn for a few seconds.....and our engines are PUMPS....they suck air in....and blow it out......what you hear is just a function of the engine continuing to suck in air as it slows to a stop with NO combustion happening.

I don't mean to be negative but it sounds like you have problems. Did you clean out the intake first? Did you disconnect the negative lead of your battery first? Did you reinstall the MAS in the proper direction? Did you remember to reinstall the temp guage? Did you let the computer reset itself and idle for about 20 min? My install and operation went perfect. The only thing that took time was moding the bypass to fit on the Injen tube.

the injen cai for the 1.6l and 2.0l are different. no one has had problems with the injen for 2.0l. a lot of us had problems with the 1.6l. i know a lot of people had the exact same problem he's having with it. i had the problem, ben d had the problem, i believe tradr did, and quite a few others who blew over $200 on this thing just to take a loss when trying to resell it used. i went through two MAF's before i got rid of the intake. we don't have temp sensors on the 1.6's.

I dunno what the problem is... we all checked for vacuums leaks with the MAF not being seated properly maybe, I made a rubber seal for it and still had the same problem... switched filters, same problem, and i even cut mine so it didnt sit in the wheel well, helped a little actually, but then i saw check engine light. we tried asking the tech people over at injen what the deal was, they blamed it on the installer. i seem to remember Tony Moore I believe trying to get a list together of people who were having problems, but only a couple of us responded of the people who were complaining about it. He was going to try to do something with the list and with Injen to try to correct the situation. But, I don't think anything ever came of it. That was long, and probably more info than you cared to hear, or see rather.

Hi guys. Sorry if any of you are having problems with the 1.6L. We have faced similar problems with vehicles utilizing the Nippon Denso Air Sensor like the one in your cars. We have a good fix now. I am not saying nobody tried to get help but we do have a lifetime warranty. I know Mike Lucero tried to get help but it took time to see what the true problem was.
Please understand that not all of the 1.6L had a problem. Some are just fine, including the test vehicles. We noticed that if the sensor becomes dirty, you have to clean it or the check engine light turns on and the car leans out. On top of this, over filter was flowing too much. Too much is a bad thing this time. So what did we do? So far we have used a new, less flowing filter that was developed for us, tested on Lexus diagnostics and flow benched so this problem would go away.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to flame INJEN over there or anything. Just tellin you what we experienced (just so no one gets the point i was makin crossed). I've seen INJEN produce some good stuff, like the 2.0l protege intake. :] I'll be emailing you Ryan. Thanks for dropping by the board about this.

Ok, I gave Injen another shot after talking with Ryan over at Injen. I got my CAI in the mail yesterday and installed it today and so far... so good. Hopefully, this intake which I might add is a bit different than the first one I had, will work better for me. Only time (and tonights cruising) will tell if the intake works better for me. ;] I'll repost in a couple days after I've driven on it. I'm glad I have that sound back though

Will the injen intake work for the 1.8 2000 protege also???

Right now I have the HKS on there.

The 1.6L Ingen intake would have to be cut up to fit the 1.8L. Doesn't make much since since there are other intakes available for the 1.8L. The 2.0L Injen intake might work, but you'd need to be careful with the clearance to the brake master cylinder. The 2.0L Proteges use the G type transaxle which is longer than the F type used in the 1.8L. So the engine in the 1.8L is closer to the master cylinder.

Ok I see then, are there any cold air intakes for the 1.8?

Or should I just make a custom one with the one I have now?

The only ones I know of specifically made to fit the 1.8L are short ram intakes. You could make you own extension, or try one of the 2.0L intakes and be careful of the fit near the master cylinder.
