Injen CAI / AEM Short Ram Question

Hi All,

Just wanna get your opinion on which of the two intakes is the loudest? All things being equal, that is pretty much the deciding factor for me. I use the car for long highway drives, so I don't want it too loud, but I do want a "meaner growl".

Anyone heard both intakes on the P5?

I have not heard the AEM on a P5 but my P5 has the Injen CAI, and the sound is absoluteley INCREDIBLE!!! As soon as the throttle body is opened, it's a low, throaty roar... At highway speeds though, it's nice and quiet. (Like Stock.) The only time you ever get the nice sound is under open throttle situations, or when the throttle is more than halfway open. Once up to speed though, she remains nice and quiet.

Either way, the Injen has more advantages over the AEM. As such, that's my choice. Search for another posting I made on this issue, and read what I had to say.

I've never heard either on a protege but I've heard sri and cai on Honda's and I think the cai's sound better.

the sound is all in the open element filter. The AEM sounds great as well. Its a much deeper "growl" when accelerating and when driving at highways speeds it does sound stock. I bought the AEM since I had experience with their products and knew that their kits are top notch. Until I see some dyno results nobosy knows which yeilds more power so as someone else on the board put it "it's a coin toss" get which one you like better, is cheaper, or get the K&N drop in.....

Went to buy one today... holy crap!

CAD $400 for AEM ShortRam
CAD $460 for Injen CAI



Is this right? Anyone in the toronto area able to get either of them cheaper?

With prices that close, I'd definately get the Injen.

Simply put, the Injen CAI will give you more horsepower than the AEM. Hands-down. No one can deny it. It's sucking in colder air than the AEM, which is more dense. More air = more power. Simple math. So, is the extra $60 worth all the power? I think so, unless you enjoy feeding your engine hot air. Sure, you may be getting better flow, but it's hotter than the stock system, so in effect you're cancelling yourself out.

On the way home from my girlfriend's last night, as soon as I got into the garage, I popped the hood and felt my Injen. It was about -32* C outside at the time, but when I touched my intake, my fingers actually got stuck! (Like licking a pole in winter.) Shortly after I managed to remove them, the entire intake pipe frosted up. I'm talking thick frost here too, not that **** you get on your windows, but this was more like something you'd find in your freezer! And that's only after about a minute!

Simply put, the engine was getting air that was about -32* C. Engines like cold air, and the Injen gave me the coldest it could. Need I say more?

AEM did try a cold air design and they published that it did not yeild the greatest power gains and thats why they didn't make it....I'm sure that in the fender/wheel well there is a ton of air too....some of the intake pipes are coated or made of a heat resistant metal that will help to keep the pipe....prove that your intake gets more air and that its actually colder please......then maybe I'll get an injen...

I think that with the Injen being farther inside away from the engine the chances of getting warmer engine air are less. For air flow I doubt theres much difference. In the engine there is air generated from the fan, and in the well air can come in through the fog spot. I think that you just have to decide on whether you want to see the filter or not.

Another thing... when I was at the shop (JRP, it's the only Injen Authorized Dealer in Canada), he said if I waited a while AEM might have their CAI out by then!!!!!! He said he was under the impressiont they weren't making them either, but he received a "New Product Package" for the Protege5 AEM CAI.

Now, I don't know if he's right or not. I don't know him enough to trust his information. Just thought I'd share what he said.

nightowl: Did you get it for $310 Canadian Dollars? How long ago? Apparently retail has gone up for both intakes in the last little while

Are you sure? I know of two "authorized" dealers right here in Calgary for sure. Anyone can get an intake from Injen, but these two I know for sure deal exclusevly with Injen, and stock ALOT of their product. Auto Zeal and RPM Racing in case you'd like to check.

Ok, just TRY an Injen for a short time. First, drive for about an hour with your stock intake. Then, be sure to feel the intake manifold for temperature, and also be sure to notice that plastic tends to hold heat alot better than metal. (Metal is easier to lose the heat.)

Now, put on an Injen, and drive for about an hour in the same conditions. Feel the intake and the intake manifold. The difference is night and day.

Please, it makes simple sense. You're not getting air from the engine compartment, but instead from a cold wheelwell... Hmmmmmmm... Ok, children, which air is warmer?

Gold star to everyone who guessed the engine air!
