Which Exhaust System???

First I want to get mushy and say what a sweet forum this is. I've learned so much about my P5 from all the users

Down to business...

As with most of us, I'm looking for more power. I've installed an AEM RAM in my P5 and noticed an improvement (and I hear a nice growl when accelerating). I'm guessing the next thing to look at is the exhaust system. When talking to people and looking at different threads I'm seeing no agreement. I'm looking for performance, just a bit louder than stock would be great (not too loud), and best bang for the $$$.

In your infinite wisdom, what have you experienced and what do you recommend? I was looking at the Vibrant Axle-Back for $422CDN ($295USD)... is it any good?

Thanks for the help.

If you're looking for any noticeable power gains, those will only be found with a cat-back exhaust system. An axle-back system would give you a muffler, if I'm understanding it correctly.

Both Racing Beat and Mazdaspeed make cat-back systems. The pipe diameter is larger and the piping in mandrel bent for less restriction. I'd go with either of these.

Axle-back is the muffler and a couple feet of 2.25 piping. The guy at the Mazda dealership said there would be an improvment as I'm forcing more air through the system with the AEM intake.

I'm told the Mazdaspeed is pretty loud. How does the Racing Beat compare and what's the price?

Do you know of any universals that meet what I'm looking for? I just found a guy who does custom work for good prices.

Thanks.

Thanks.
The Racing Beat is a pretty quiet system, not too intrusive. It's only about $400 USD for the full stainless steel cat-back.

The Mazdaspeed isn't too loud until 3500r's or so unless you really get on it.
And then...*goes into his best Linda Richmond voice*...It's loik Barbara's voice...it's loik Buttah!

Somebody told me about a website that had sound samples of different cars with different exhaust systems, but didn't know the address. Has anybody heard of this site?

here is the JIC exhaust on a p5 and a sound clip, scroll half way down the page. Might be a litlle louder and bigger than you want. but just another option. Very expensive, but great quality and fit.

Hey

Hey mate,

Its a good thing to ask around for what the best system is for your car. Ive gone through 4 systems on my 2000 model. The system ive got on there now is:

custom made extractors
2.5 inch pipe running to a hot dog
2.5 inch pipe running over the back axel
Turbo smart cannon 2.5 inlet / 4 inch outlet

i find that is a sick system

Thanks for the suggestions group... The last thing I want to do is drop the cash and then find out the system sucks.

Big problem... my lawn mower just blew up (too much boost on the turbo I think) The cash I had for the exhaust system has just gone bye bye.

Ah screw it... that's what credit cards are for. You can never have too much debt right?

www.teammoonexhaust.com

it's pretty well built and affordable...also gets you better gains than the mazdaspeed and most other units out there...installation is a little tough as you will need 2 people (one to position the unit to clear the rear suspesion and the other to tighten the bolts

a 4" tip is gigantic (the size of the tip determines how raspy the exhaust is)...i had a 4" tip and cut it off and had a 2 1/2" tip welded on instead...now it looks and sounds aggressive

The 4 inch tip is moulded on there by turbo smart!!! i dont think it sounds horrible its got a sweet note to it, ive got a hot dog on there aswell so it takes the rumble out of it. its only producing 68 db so thats fairly quite

talking with charlie at teammoon he has also had several complaints from the size of the tip ranging from the noise it makes but also how it creates fitment issues if the exhaust is not installed properly...i was told on future models they may use a smaller tip

Pardon my ignorance of Aussie terminology for car parts, but what is a "hot dog"? The only kind of "hot dog" I'm familiar with is the kind you eat at a baseball game.

if you want noticable power. you need a nitrous kit or a turbo kit.

catback, yah, maybe you might be able to tell, intakes are probably more noticable on your buttdyno. but if you change
the header too, then im sure you can tell.

i just went with a mazdaspeed axleback on my pro5 because
5whp gain (maybe on a catback) is not going to pull me up to
60mph under 8sec anyway.

i might do the wet kit in the future, probably not though as
its a pain to keep refilling the bottles all the time (using a
60shot on my 98 prelude)
