Engine Swap, yet another question!

i'm new here
i've searched, believe me.

everyone keeps pointing out how good the 1.6l engine is
right now, i drive a mazdaspeed protege with the 2.0T engine.
the engine is ****, plain and simple.

i have been wanting to go to a BPT, but people keep saying is too hard.
so, since i've seen the power of a 1.6l engine (hiboost protege)
i wanted to know how doable is this.?

has anyone ever attempted anything like it?

will it bolt up?

any suggestions appreciated.

Wish I could help ya out with your question, but I dunno either to be honest with ya. I don't think this forum or MSProtege has any real information about it since engine swaps just aren't something Protege owners are into I guess. I'll search around a lil for ya and let ya know, I've become a frequent visitor at an Australian Mazda forum and those guys do some wicked ****. I'll let ya know if I find anything.

Hey Alejo, here's what I'd suggest.

If you're SERIOUS about an engine swap and you have access to a few donor vehicles I'd personally look into some measurements on doing a 2.5L KL-ZE swap. You'd basically need to modify your subframe, transmission linkages, axles, wiring harness, etc but the payoff would be much better in the long run.

To answer your question, NO. It won't be an easier to do a 1.6/1.8L BP-t swap into a 3rd gen. And for the money a 200hp NA V6 would be a LOT more streetable and liveable than a 160bhp turbo 4.

Besides 2.5L KL-series cars area dime a dozen. I can't tell you how many sub-$500 MX6's I've seen in the past 3 months. Buy a whole donor with a good powertrain and rough body and do the rest.

i guess is not worth it...eh?

the KLDE would be a good alternative......the thing is that it requiered too much custom fabbing....i don't want to lose the turbo...


i've seen proteges with kl motors...is realy doable...if the motor fits a 626, and we have the same motor at the 626 i4...of course it should fit...

must be a pain tho

it wouldn't be any different than a bp-t swap. In all honesty I'd rather have the NA V6 than a Bp-t. For all around driving it would run better and be more responsive. When you want more power throw a 55hp shot of nitrous on it.

he benefit of a NA V6 is that you can run regular 85-87 octane fuel and still get good gas mileage. You'll be making a lot more power in a vehicle with less body weight so you should actually see a mileage increase.

Is the KLDE your talking about the MX6 one that I saw some Canadians throw into a Protege 5 a year ago or so. I think it bolted right up after the tranny and engine swap. Not much room left after but they said it would turbo quite nicely.

Hang with the MSP'ers for awhile first. Total up the cost of the MSP mods to the existing car and then the total cost of a swap (including credit for selling your MSP set up). I suspect the money is better spent on the motor you have now.

I highly doubt he'd get the 32-34mpg highway I get on my basically MSP turbo setup with a V6er in there, as much as I love the sound of a nice KL.

I have the power of a larger engine when I want (7.5psi of boost) and the fuel economy of a four cylinder when I don't.

that being said, I really don't like how forced induction (well specifically turbocharging) feels. I'd much rather a supercharger or just a more powerful N/A build.

For the price of a BP-T swap (OBDII how?) you could have just bought a forged block from speedcircuit

as bad a msprotege is, i haven't got banned...

i came over here coz i've heard alot about this forum. it is more protege-oriented than msprotege....there, the 3, 6 and cx-7 took over....

i find myself going there sometimes and not having anything to talk about.
it got boring...

i sitll own a protege for christs sake, i want to talk proteges!

Yea we love Proteges over here .. the Mazda3 guys are trying to take over but it's not happening
If you're looking for Protege talk, you've come to the right place for sure. ClubProtege is also good, but they're hardcore 1st/2nd gen Protege over there.

BTW, did you ever manage to sell all those parts you had for sale?

let's back up and clarify...yes a 1.6L ZM-DE swap is possible, and sorry Matty, but it would be MUCH easier to do than a BPT or KL-ZE swap....

Bear in mind this engine is made for 3rd gen Protege's , so it will bolt in, however it would require a different tranny, ecu , and wiring harness....

It would be cost prohibitive and labor intensive though...For what you want, you are better off spending your money on a forged rotating assembly, then you can boost the hell out of the FS with proper fuel. Keep in mind you are talking about an engine swap, new harness,new tranny, theb buying the turbo setup, new clutch to handle the power, etc

your current car is already set up for boost, you just need tougher parts and more fuel to handle the extra power
