Well, after taking the bumper/fender liner off several times just to get access to the filter, I realized the whole CAI thing wasn't working to well for me. I took a pipe cutter and cut it as shown so now it's a "short ram" intake. It's actually a little louder than before...it actually screams just short of redline now. Woohoo!

I have the same intake and also thought about doing this because I hate how difficult it is to get to the filter when I want to clean it. Are there any noticible differences in performance? I mean, something that a week after it is done I am going to notice?

you should have just bought the ractive short ram.. it pretty much stops at that position.. and you probably would have saved some money too.. but since you cut it.. is there a way for you to attach a pipe to the end of that filter to make it a CAI again.. but with the filter in the engine bay... thats what i was planning to do..

all it would take is another piece of the rubber hose like the one on the throttle body to connect it and make it cold air again. when i did this the first time (cut it), i didn't see any reason to go CA again though. the car seemed the exact same... just a little louder (aside from the whole getting rid of the CEL the first batch of injen's gave off)

what kind of filter is that ? And you say its louder the cai was loud enoughfor me did u get a check engine light yet and also did this decrease the slight jerking ?

Ractive sells a filter extension for its filters that connects to the open end and makes a CAI. That a way you can have an inlline intake

Yeah, the CAI is a little louder. For me, it's perfect but I'm not looking to wake up the whole neighborhood if you know what I mean. No check engine lights, almost no jerking. I'm hoping it will be totally gone when I get a gasket custom made at this hose and gasket shop here in town.

I'm thinking the reason for the jerking is because of the turbulence in the pipe. Cutting off the cold air extension eliminates those bends and makes the flow smoother past the MAF.

Oh yeah, that's a Ractive Heat Sheild filter. It's made for 3" piping, but my intake tube is 2.5". No problem fitting though, just clamp it down real well and it fits fine.

From driving around for a while now, I think theres a pretty noticeable difference. Before, it used to lag and hesitate under 3K RPM, not anymore. The power is more linear. Faster, probably not. More drivable, yes.

just to let every one know that is not a ram air and will never be one. people throw that phrase around like nothing. a ram air would be if the air filter was right behind the front grill so the air get forced into to filter. don't want to start a flame war but i wanted to clear things up.

My friend did it to his Corolla, I think it worked for him. But it looks very ghetto...maybe it's because he used duct tape to attach the filter .

Yo to that Here in "sunny" Fla it rains too damn much for a CAI. I can't be leaving the 5 in the carhole half the year, I need to drive.
