Black box thingy

01 protege 1.6L
The thing under the hood that feeds air to the air filter box.

Can I take it apart to clean. Not the air filter box, but the other one mounted right up front with 2 bolts holding it on. Does it get blocked and require cleaning?

P.S. I am not a new member, just forgot old password and tried to get my password by submitting Email address and they did not reconise it.

no, that's your MAF. don't mess it up. it's expensive to fix. and it doesn't ever need to be cleaned unless you have an over-oiled air filter.

no hes talking about the actualy intake mounted above the radiator, and yes i think it comes apart, but you could always just spray some air through it....

over radiator

Nope box over radiater that comes off with 2 bolts at front of hood. Is there a filter in there too. You would think that there is a foam or something to catch moisture.

Nope! And if you wanted you could take all of that off and it'll sound better and run a little (very little) better.

oh, ok, the thing over the radiator. gotcha. you can definitely take it off. it doesn't need to have anything to capture the moisture because the hood blocks 99% of all moisture going that way, and because all that tubing makes it almost impossible for you to get any significant amount of water into the intake system short of driving your car into a lake. so to answer your original question, yes, you can take it off. there's nothing to clean though, really. if you take out all that piping, the car will sound nicer on throttle, but other than that, i reckon it doesn't do much but make noise.

I took mine off 2 days before I put my CAI on and to tell you the truth I thought it ran just as good as it did with the CAI on. I could feel a differance in acceleration. Then I put the CAI on and it stayed the same. I would think you could go out and buy a K&N drop in filter and save a little cash. The only upside to the CAI is it looks good.

Actually I have the K&N drop in and have had it since aprox ~50k, now I have ~120K. I like the drop in. Its a good filter, easy to clean, easy to re-oil. I have them for the last 4 cars I had. No problems-no evaporation of oil on MAS flow wire. In fact never had any issues before with the mas air flow thingy. So if I am taking off the stock intake, is there going to be any problems driving round trip to Orlando ~6000kms. How about the 1.6L. Never had this car to Orlando. My choice is the familly hauler 3.3L caravan 03 or my 1.6 L Pro. Myself and the woman

Almonte Ontario Canada to Orlando Florida/Tampa/Miami ect...

If you have that many miles on it leave it alone. Any kind of change can be bad. If the car is running good at 150k then I would keep it like it is. I've had people clean there motors and for some unknown reason the thing blows.
Like my dad says, IF IT AINT BROKE DON'T FIX IT!

I cut out all the plastic over where the horn was mounted so it gets air from the grille and also bored out the plastic behind the blocked off honeycombs in front to the intake opening. That's closer to ram-air. Got a big improvement from that, plus it leaves the hemholtz resonator in place which I'm sure is a performance advantage. Next I'm going to fabricate an extension that leads to the grille so it will be real ram-air. Doesn't do a thing for the sound but so what .

Oh I though you were saying miles. LOL my bad. Then yank all of that off. You'll see a good improvement.
