Another stupid exhaust question...

Yeah I decided to say **** that AWR header, I'm gonna be buying that stage 3 turbo kit from Spool here like next month or so, and my question is this (yes I searched)

I gots a Bosal catback exhaust on there right now, its like 2.25 diameter or some stupid **** like that, but anyway the thing was loud as **** so I stuffed one of their silencers in there. Now the silencer is kinda a skinny tube thing that goes into the muffler, and I was wondering if that's gonna be a hinderance as far as my turbo performance. I mean I understand the concept of like a pipe being only to flow as much as the narrowest section and stuff like that, but uhh am I gonna have to get a new exhaust, cause there's no way in hell I'd roll that Bosal without the silencer.

thanks

It will be a big time hindrance. With a turbo, you want as little backpressure as possible. In fact, your 2.25" exhaust may be too small. 2.5" or 3" would probably be better.

Your exhaust WILL have a silencer. It's called a turbo. It is the best muffler ever devised. They muffle sound all by themselves; you can get away with a much less restrictive muffler on a turbo car. This is the reason that Flyin' Miata sells different exhaust systems for turbo and non-turbo Miatas. It's also why the Dodge SRT-4 can get away with nothing but a couple of tiny glasspack silencers from the factory.

Ahh word, yeah cause in the kit it says it includes a 2.5" downpipe, so I would prolly want to match that diameter all the way to the back huh? I mean a 3" diameter wouldn't do me any good if its being fed through a 2.5" pipe right? Alright well ****, I guess I'll start lookin into new exhaust setups too. Kinda didn't want to, but oh well. Now as far as the sound, I'm confused. You say the turbo will muffle it? So its possible I could run for awhile with the silencer taken out of my current exhaust system without it drivin me nuts? Oh well I'll guess I'll just have to try it to find out, thanks for your reply.

Hey Pseudo before I call around o this you know of an average price for a shop to do some mandrel bending? 3" piping.

Im pretty much just curious but may eventually go down this route.

Alright thanks guys I appreciate it. I'll find some muffler and then have some shop weld me up a 3" exhaust. I'll probably slap the turbo on the first with my 2.25" Bosal (remove the silencer) and run with that for a month or so, then get the new custom exhaust done. That way it'll be like cool twice and stuff. Go faster with the turbo, the run better with the exhaust, or sumthin like that. I think the only other thing I'm gonna do... err wait I'll take this to the forced induction section its prolly more relevant, it has to do with buying better injectors and a fuel pump perhaps if that would help, or if its even necessary.

I highly recommend this book to get you started...

From the spool website, the "SPOOL Stage 3" is just an intercooler... not a whole kit... did you mean the stage 1 or 2 with the stage 3 upgrade?

Anyways a turbo kit is a big step up from 'just' an AWR header... enjoy

Yeah dude, I mean the Stage 1 kit with the Stage 3 intercooler..... heh nah I thought I would just be cool and drive around witha front mount intercooler on with no turbo. Maybe I could just scare people outta my way.... Cause I have heard that the only difference between the Stage 2 and 1 kits from Spool are looks in the turbo manifold. THe shorty and the full tubular one really doesn't yield $200 worth of performance. And yeah I know the turbo will probably be quite different than the header, but I got a nice lump of chedda right now and I was like well if I'm gonna spend ~500 for a header, and then whatever else I would need to make power I might as well do sumthin that would produce a good price/power ratio. I never really intended for my car to be fast, but since I found that turbo kit, I was like hell yeah that ain't that bad, and I'm pretty sure I could put it on myself too. If not I got a homie I can fall back on who's really good at working on **** like this.

I know a little (I stress little) about turbos I used to have an Eclipse GSX, that car was pretty fun, but it was getting old. And now I can have a turbo car with no tubo insurance.

Hahah yeah and one of those electronic BOV thingies that sit inside your engine and just make the "SPPSHHH" sound. That would be helly dope. People woulodn't even try when they roll up to line, they'd just be "daaaaammmnn"
