Still sqeaking belts

98 Protege DX After replacing waterpump once, alternator twice, belst 4 times. Still after a few miles service light will go on and belt will start to squeek randomly. Usually upon startup. it disappears if i turn off and on engine. may take a couple of tries but it noice disappears. the ac fan when turned on sometimes also makes belt squeek. WHAT ELSE CAN I TRY TO STOP THIS ANNOYING BELT SQUEEK. Thanks for all your help in advance.

Tighten it down. That sound your hearing is the belt sqealing along the pulley and not turning it.

Like said above, your belt is not tight. I am not sure as to why your check engine light is coming on, but the belt will start making noise every time you add load, i.e. headlights, a/c, etc. Mine used to do the same thing.

Also, most car parts stores or shops can scan your car for the CEL. They might even tell you whats causing it. Autozone does it for free. Goodluck.

Your pulleys have **** on them. Take them off, clean them regardless of wether or not they look dirty. A good sandblasting would be the best though its slightly overkill.
Get new belts from the dealership and tighten them properly. I know how cramped the second gen engine compartment is so its not easy. Then talk to us.

What about soap? i used to work with someone who would swear by holding a bar of soap to them would make them silent?
I guess it just lubricates them a little bit? has anyone actually tried this?

Lubrication would make them squeal worse.

Lubing is only a temporary fix, so don't even bother.

Mine had a oil leak out of the seals behind the timing belt, no matter how many alternator belts were put on, they would slip after a month. 1,000 later, oil leak stopped, its all better. Mazda tore it apart and found two seals leaking onto the timing belt then onto the alternator belt. I never saw any oil, but now its quiet, and its been 3 months.
