air intake advice
I have a '97 Protege LX and i am wanting to install an intake system on my engine. The only problem is that it has the 1.5L engine, and there are no aftermarket intakes made for that engine. I know that i will have to go the custom route, but i was wondering which intake model will be the easiest to modify.
Current Mods:
1997 Protege LX
Pioneer DEH-8400 Head Unit
Pioneer Premier 6 1/2" speakers in doors
Pioneer Premier 6x9 speakers in rear
(2) Cadence 12" subwoofers
Power Acoustik 1200 Watt amp for subs
Pioneer 400 watt 4 channel for speakers
17" Enkei RS6 wheels with Hankook Ventus 205/40R17 tires
Future Mods:
Custom air intake (once i can find the easiest route to go)
Ground Control coilover kit
front strut tower brace
aftermarket front and rear swaybars (if i can find some that fit)

I think some people made it work with out any modifications and some people had to some minor ones. But this has been the story with our 1.5L - trial and error, and/or custom build ones. I build mine for less then $40. Though, I am putting my stock one back on, my mileage is sh*t right now, and $1.70 a gallon I cannot afford to have that.

Ok, i see now that i will have to build one out of scratch, if i am going to build one at all. It sounds to me like the best option for me is to just do an engine swap. I would love to make a custom intake for my car, but i am not good at that stuff, and i sure don't want to do something that will mess up my engine. I know where a wrecked Protege ES is, and i may just buy it for the engine and drivetrain. I am also wondering how difficult it would be to rip my engine and drivetrain out and throw in a Miata engine and powertrain. I could have rear-wheel drive that way, hehe.

I have been told by someone here that the intake kit for the '95 - '96 1.5L won't fit my '97. Is there any truth to that. You see, that's the one i was about to buy, until i was told that.
