Did any one notice that the street imports has a BPT with AWD? How sweet would that be to set up on a Pro?

Great, though you would need to find an AWD floorpan. I saw an AWD model Protege in San Francisco for $1500.

Unfortunately the AWD tranny is weak and doesn't stand up to hard launches.

So you buy a gutted frame and work from the ground up.... Expensive, but in the end would put the Mazdaspeed to shame. So 1500 for engine + tranny, 1500 for frame with AWD. Upgrades and a couple of swaps and you have a base for exterior/interior mods for under 10k. Not bad. The 200+ hp on AWD is not bad either... I'd never do it, but man would that be a fun project to work on.

Still too busy thinking of Mazda 3 projects... (mmmm 3.....)

Don't forget the $$$$ that it would cost to import GTX or GTR drivetrain (Axles, rear diff etc....) from Japan.
