Lightbulb Wiring Fog Lights Into Headlights??

Hey guys. I'm putting a pair of fog lights on my Toyota Tercel, and I've run into some difficulty. I have basically decided that the other internet based Tercel owners are total morons, hence I don't ask them my questions anymore.

You guys have all helped me countless times in the past, so hopefully you can do it one more time.

I am wanting to wire the fog lights so that they always come on with the headlights. Can I just splice the wires from the foglights into the back of the headlights, or will this cause problems with dimming and such?

I would just use the switch that comes with the lights and turn it on and off, but it is one of those big ugly plastic light up ones, and I think they pretty much look like @#$% so I don't want to use it.

If I"m headed in the wrong direction please let me know, and tell me how to correctly perform what I am attempting here.

Something tells me Darryl is going to come to my rescue here..... we'll see....

If you hook them directly to the back of the lights, you may overload the circuit and fry something. (I always try to use a relay with fog lights or electric fans) Plus, they'd only work with the low beams on.

Is there a headlight fuse under the hood?

There is one in the fuse box. Can I hook up to it somehow? I have also had a heck of a time trying to run wires through the firewall which is why I've just decided to hook them up to the headlights. I will probably leave them on all the time anyway, so this will just save me a lot of headache.....

What, Felix said...

By adding 2 relays per side, you can have them on with both low and high beam. No wires through the firewall either, so it'll be nice and easy for you

I can make you up a relay diagram, all you'd need are the relays, some wire and connectors.

Also, check out my Alarm FAQ (link in my sig) it has some basic info on how relays work and different wiring diagrams.

If you run switches, then you gotta run wire thru the firewall....or invest in a wireless kit.
but how's this for sleek...?

hah, i used that same space with an LED as an idiot indicator so i don't leave my fog lights on. personally, i believe i do great electronic repair work when it comes to a soldiering iron and some rosin core, however, the integrity of wiring a relay on each side is not something i'd see holding up. what would you wrap the relay with, electrical tape? even so, it's not water proof and bound to just be a big mess/ball of wires anyway. hmmm, i've been thinking daryl, what gauge wire do running lights come with? you know, just been thinking, four big KC lights to blind the **** out of everyone mounted on the front of my car... what do you think?
peace

i have had relays under my hood for 10+ years....I used relay sockets and shrink wrapped the ends then just taped and loomed the rest, no problems. If your good with wires, you should NEVER have a rats nest of wires in your installations

4 big *** KC lites huh....i'd use 8-10awg cable and maybe upgrade the alternator or those 150watts will only look like 50watts....
