Winter restoration on indefinite hold.
For those of you that haven't heard, I'm going away with the Air National Gaurd for 9 months starting May 1. I was in a mad dash to get my Protege restored for the summer show/autoX season. Since I won't be here for any of it, I'm officially ending the rebuild. If I truly am gone for the whole 9 months, I will probably sell my Pro when I get back. I'll have made enough $ to have a SWEET down payment on a 2002 or 2003 GTI 1.8T. I'll let you guys know.
BTW, just so no one asks, I'm going some place VERY hot, and VERY in the news. I honestly can't say any more than that. Have a good summer everyone.

hi i am sorry i didnt mean to be offensive. i read that and realized that it sounded like i was bitching, but it came out wrong. so i did some research. the tdi which is what i was tsalking about (even though I was wroing) only has 90 hp. that's a different engine. the engine that gtx140 was talking about the 1.8T has 180 hp (respectable, very). But the engine that identity_X referred to the VR6 has 201. but costs roughly $1500 bucks more tyhan the 1.8T. not alot more but maybe to much for a younger person. my apoligies from now on I will research before I speak.

1.8T all the way
1st off, I'm a huge VW buff so I think I can say with authority that, compared to the 1.8T, the VR6 sucks. Yes, it has more power and TQ, but there is nothing that can be done to them. If I had both cars, and $2000 to spend on each motor, the 1.8 would kill the VR6 in the end. The VR6 is so hot from the factory, there's little that can be done other than cams and manifolds. The 1.8T is capable of 210 hp with a simple Split Second BC and an exhaust. ($600 total) Also, the 1.8T has been bench tested to take 500hp on all stock internals. The VR6 is just as strong, but it takes a lot more work, and $, to get there.
BTW, 4 Motion is not available in the US on any MKIV platform, except the Audi TT. Audi calls it Quattro.

I agree on the 1.8T. I don't a lot about VWs, but I hear they 1.8Ts are great platforms to start on.
How about waiting to see if they are in fact going to release the Mazda Speed 3, or whatever they were going to call it. I'm referring to post about a turbocharged MP3 being realeased this year, or next year called the Mazda Speed 3 (I think).
I can't speak for VW, but the MP3 is a cornering machine. With a turbo it would be probably THE best all-around performer under $20k. Just something to think of.
Good luck, by the way!

No knocking up
No man, I haven't knocked anyone up At least, my GF has not said so. I did get a little good news about the trip. I ran into a guy who spent 6 months where I'm going. Since there is very little to go do, and waste money on, you save a pretty penny. (plus, there are benefits like tax free income and other bonuses) Long story short, he is a lower rank than me, was there for 6 months, and came home with $15K in the banks. Since I make more $ than him, I should come home with some nice scratch. I think my dreams might just come true, and a GTI 1.8T will be in my garage. I'm thinking about this now because, in a couple months, that'll be the LAST thing on my mind. My job is a little more important than any car I want. Gotta keep my priorities in order.
