Quick question on cluster lights....

Ok, background is that I'm doing a guage cluster swap into my Escort, because if I ever do the turbo swap this summer, I'll need to be able to see speeds up to 140

Now here's the question:

There is the CHECK CDL light with the engine outline at the lower left of the guage. So, what's the red CHECK light for in the lower right? check engine, also?

could someone explain?

Thanks!!!

Yes, they are interchangable.

I think it's the seatbelt light on the lower right of the cluster.

Makes me wonder what other parts are interchangable...

Well, it's not the seat belt light.. right under the seatbelt light is a red light with no markings on it, which is what I'm trying to figure out the meaning of..

Does anyone have the Owner's Manual that they could check for me?

On the left side, from top to bottom, is :
Boost Power - dunno, maybe from the ProGT turbo?
Hold - dunno, maybe from the ProGT turbo?
Fuel
Washer
Check C.O.L. (with the outline of an engine on the light)

And on the Right side, from top to bottom:
Charge
Oil
Brake
Belts
Check (with just a blank red light)

It is interchangeable, with some slight wiring modifications, and a little trimming of the inside of the dashboard.

As far as other parts that are interchangeable, the 90-94 protege is almost exactly like the 91-98 escorts, chassis-wise. So suspension, etc. is good across the board (ZX2 S/R Struts!) And the engine and stuff from the Escort GT is actually the same 1.8L DOHC that's in the Protege's.

The BOOST POWER is for the turbo, HOLD is for an Auto tranny and the blank on the lower right could have been for the AWD diff lock. But i know the switch for it (which goes next to the dimmer switch) has it's own light, like all the other dash switches...

Now, my Factory Electrical Manual only shows 9 out the 10 lights, makes no mention of that second CHECK light...could be a systems check, ECU etc... or just a nothing light to balance out 5 on each side....which i tend to think so...(BTW, the manual is for the Protege, 323 and AWD models)

Wow, thanks! that was very informative.

I think I'll have to make a MIL-spec protected toggle switch on the dash just to turn on the BOOST light.. just for giggles.

Hopefully, if I get up the ambition tomorrow, I'l have a working protege cluster in my Escort.

I'm thinkin' that the 140MPH speedo will help me beat the triumph spitfire and MG MGB in my autocross club in a couple weeks...
