question about air intake

I already have a intake on my car but it's only on using a adapter and filter..I want to have a custom pipe made and use the existing Mass air sensor what is that square shaped box and what's it's purpose? Can I remove that when making this custom pipe and run it straight to the MAS?

That square-shaped box is the H-box. Its function is to increase and maintain low speed torque. If you remove it you will decrease low speed torque and adversely affect your performance. Leave it in place even if you modify the rest of the air intake system.
