Ok, I got a problem with my intake.

I got an 87 RX7 VAF meter, and a K&N conical filter today, after i hooked everything up I am getting some hesitation. It has a weak idle, and it sounds like it wants to cut off when I give it quick gas and let off the pedal. But on the other hand, After it gets going, it hauls ***.

Does the 94 Protege have a KAM sensor ( Keep Alive Memory ) ??
I have heard that when you unhook the negative battery cable for 15 minutes it resets the KAM. might this help with the resitation, or is a bigger problem than I am guessing?

what do you guys think, anyone had the same problems after converting to the RX7 air flow sensor?

did you 'finetune' the meter for your car?...you have to take the black plastic cover off to do this - 'mazdaspeedwest' has an install how-to for installing AND adjusting it... be sure to check it out as he has some HELPFUL tips on how to do it right

Sure, use it on your SOHC.

also for the record (again )

ECU reset procedure:
1. remove battery negative cable
2. stomp on brake pedal for 30 secs
3. reconnect negative battery cable

my site URL for the how-to is:

Cool at about what RPM do you feel the surge?....for the DOHC it's 6000rpm, but i suspect the SOHC to be lower.

VAF

Would I be able to get a vaf from a mazda dealer? I have a 1.8L sohc motor. Is this a direct bolt on? What kind of modifications do I have to do to the engine, other than the intake pipes?

Go to a pick-a-part, or any wrecking yard, and look for a 1st gen RX-7 (mid to late 80's). You'll pay about $30 for it. That's how I found mine. Although I haven't put mine in yet.
You'll need a couple of reducers and an adapter for the VAF-to-Filter side.

Check out mazdaspeedwest's how-to page. He has the information regarding this modification.

My mistake. Don't know why I said 1st gen.

you don't want to do that, unless you have $1000 burning a hole in your pocket. Thats the price i was quoted from the stealer a few years back when i got mine. I called just for fun....we both (the parts guy) had a good laugh.

the surge is around 5500 - 6000, but I have an auto and it's getting into 7000 when shifting. sometimes it will catch second gear, hehehe, feels like a shift kit mod. I need to be careful, I'm over due for a new timing belt.
