Question K&N Air Filter/Bosch Sparkplugs

I have a 91 Protege 323 DX. I am planning on buying a universal K&N Drop in Air Filter and some Platinum Bosch Sparkplugs. One of my friends said that you can improve the airflow of the car by drilling some holes into the air filter (he's a mechanic). Anyone have experience with this or with Air Filters/Sparkplugs? I heard that Bosch is comparable to DENSO Iridium Sparkplugs but costs a lot less. Thanks.

2 things to consider:
1) almost every person that i know who has used bosch thinks they are crap (including me, they made my car run like ****), denso iridiums are by far better in every aspect

2) i have seen several Dyno runs on diff. cars where a K&N filter actually made LESS HP than the stock one
