I Got 29.4 Miles Per Gallon!

I actually got 29.4 Miles per gallon mostly city!! Freaking Amazing! Maybe it was the stop leak I put in both the radiator and crank case and the engine didn't get too hot. Maybe it wasn't using the A/C more than twice. maybe it was keeping the throttle below 2250 rpms and starting the car using hills and dropping the clutch. I DON'T KNOW but I finally gotgas mileage this engine should be getting. What a POS! But whatever it is I am NEVER going to buy a Japanese POS ever again!!! What a freaking MYTH that Japanese cars are better. I've never had such a POS in my life. I can't wait to go back to the mainland and get my FORD back that gets GOBS more power and heck of a lot better gas mileage!

I'll put my protege up to your FORD any day. Wait, isn't it FORD that stands for FOUND ON ROAD DEAD?

I would much rather have a mazda than any other car company out. :

lol you haven't looked at your car, then looked at an escort sedan have you?

And if the guy would rather have a ford, then let him have it. Everyone has a different opinion. And maybe the car is so beat that it actually is a piece of crap.

ummm, doesn't ford have some stake in mazda? 33% or something like that? so if a mazda is bad, wouldn't a ford be bad also...?

Nope...

I thought it was a rather well known fact that Escorts and 1st gen pro's were basically the same car albeit a couple engine differences. And I think it's kind of funny you guys rag on fords, yet you drive and praise a car that shares it's platform with the lowest ford out there.

Its a MAZDA designed and engineered platform that ford used aswell. Just like the BP motor. Same thing with the Probe/MX-6/626.

I figured

I figured that would get you guys excited. Seriously though I bought the protege thinking it would be the closest thing to a Ford since they merged back in the day. The thing is the worst thing about the Fords I had were the Mazda trannys. My first year in college I had a 1980 Mercury Zephyr station wagon. What a riot. It was ugly as hell, had 187,000 miles on it, but the thing is it has less problems than this Protege.

Later on I had a probe, and man I loved that. I know it had half Mazda parts, but I still drove it to about 127,000 and the paint gleamed, the suspension stayed solid and the worst thing I ever experienced was a bad thermostat because I hadn't flushed the radiator according to maintenance schedule, oh yeah and a coroding battery that I thought had been the alternator but just turned out I needed some vinegar to clean it off with. (I didn't know any better back then) Anyway at 126,000 I would be purring right along at 90mph on the interstate and still get 31mpg.

I had a friend who had a Mazda 626 turbo and was always telling me how much better Japanese cars were. I always scratched my chin and thought yeah right because he always had it in the shop for expensive repairs while my probe kept right on, and I even often beat on it. Every other month he was literally in the shop. As for the probe the ford paint never marred even under the acid rain and industrial fall out from the GM plants west of campus.

I went abroad to school and my brother totaled it. What a downer. So that was that.

Anyway, so I have this Protege of the same year. I can't understand why so many mazdas of this year have such horribly marred paint wherever I look. And a lot of older accords and oldsmobiles tool.

The Japanese is better is a "fact" Myth was debunked a few years ago when Mitsubishi was caught witholding recalls to repair the cars whenever customers brought them in for oil changes. I think there were similar issues with Nissans. I don't know why Mazdas get such horrible gas mileage with the meager power they have. If a car can get more power yet better gas mileage and last longer, then let's be honest with ourselves guys, they aren't better cars.

More of those statistics were also based on the fact that more Japanese cars were owned in warmer climates with the American cars being owned more in the industrial north where they were manufactured, so with the fluctuating temperatures and road salt that wreaks havoc on a car. Also japanese cars were owned by women mostly when these statistics came out as they were smaller cars as women liked. Women usually treat their cars better. Also people tend to treat imports better and beat on domestics.

OK back to before. I bought this thing both because I wanted something close to a Ford, and because I wanted to do as the romans do, ie buy a small jap car as most people do that around here. I can't say I'd rather have that Mercury Stationwagon with the 1956 Inline 6 but it sure had less problems than this thing. I can't imagine what happened to this because two women drove it before me. Then again they tell me asian chicks drive like maniacs here. I didn't know that at the time. But still I thought a little 1.8 would still get better gas mileage than my 2.2 or 2.0liter Fords. No chance.

Well, maybe you should take care of your protege! Cars don't maintain themselves.

Marc, nothing is a "fact," just an overall trend.

Nothing's the same for everybody. Your luck may vary. Your mileage may vary.

I have had very few problems with my car that didn't pertain to improper maintenance (last owner was a douche). My parents also had an 88 Taurus which they traded in two years later for a 90 Camry because the Ford dealers never seemed to be able to fix all the problems. The Camry just got traded in right after Christmas with 140,000 miles for a 2003 WRX. However I have a friend that has an old taurus (88? 91? around then) with no problems at 180,000 miles.

One person's experiences does not a fact make. -Yoda
