how to get to the back of the instrument cluster

Ok maybe I'm being dumb, I couldn't find this in search for our lovely first gens. How do we get to the back of the instrument cluster for bulb changes? I know that for the main piece of trim, there are five screws, two right above the gauges, two to the left and right of the steering wheel, and there's one hidden behind a panel on the left side, you have to open the door to pop off that panel and find the screw.

Now my problem is the steering wheel always gets in the way. Can I remove something to help free it?? Thanks

Any suggestions how to do that?? It's really hard to get a grip on that thing.

Oh yeah, I lowered the steering wheel a little bit by looseing the 4 bolts on it (maybe you don't have to do this if you don't have tilt?), getting it lower let the whole thing slide out a lot more easily. But I'd be really careful doing that, don't want to hurt the steering column.

Don't even bother taking it out, you can reach around and feel for the bulbs its pretty easy even if you take the wrong one out a couple of times. Just remember each trouble light corresponds to one bulb. I'd definately reach and do it by feel and make it a ten minute job instead of a 45 minute job. Oh and don't worry as long as the car is off you can't get zapped or anything. Also you'd have to reach behind there to unclip the speedo cable if you took the cluster out so you might as well get comfortable with your hands in there now
