Canadian GT Spoiler New - Edit Now pics*

Ok, First off my subject is a little deceptive, Sorry, but keep reading it will be worth it.

I have been wanting a Canadian GT spoiler for a while but with shipping and such they are always so high (i am cheap sometimes) and they were not in first class condition (picky too).
Well I got to looking and thinking. Have you ever noticed that the early mx6 (88-89) rearend looks alot like the protege's AND the mx6 spoiler looks alot like the Canadian GT spoiler. So off to the junk yard to take some measurements and sure enough the trunks on both are within 1/2 inch of being the same width, I did alot of other measuring just to make sure. So not I was pretty sure that they would fit and it looked the same. I found a place that had one for sale, a new one at that so I said what the heck and bought it.

I will wrap it up quickly.

The place is called mazdasurplus.com - there offices are like 20 minutes from my house so I could pick up my order. They sell surplus parts that is OEM NEW stuff just like the dealer. I bought a couple of other things I will list them

A new key set for 25 bucks - That is 2 master keys a valet key and all the locks to match brand new.

New carpet charcol grey 30 bucks - I checked with the dealer and it was like 425 bucks.

And the spoiler 110 bucks - brand new it comes w/o the brake light and w/o mounting hardware. I will have to get that.

Any way right now they add 50 bucks to any order under 2K but i think it was worth it.

I set the spoiler on my trunk and If I didn't know I would swear it was a Canadian GT spoiler - It looks good!

The contact info for that place is on their site but the guy I delt with is named Neville neville@surplusparts.com. Let him know I referred you if you get anything - he deals with the small orders and they will ship. They will be raising prices in like 2 weeks but will be droping the 50 dollar service fee so depending how much you are going to buy that might make a diff. Oh yeah they take paypal too.

I know this sounds like an add but I was just trying to share my findings.

I know everyone will want pictures and I will put some up soon I just wanted to let everyone know first.

I am positive the mx6 spoiler and the canadian GT spoiler are the same - or near enough that you can't tell the diff.

Peace

Wow dude ... that's a great find! Yeah, I looked at those old MX-6 spoilers and had the same thought, but then my GT spoiler kinda found me ! Actually, I've been on that website several times looking up old part numbers. I figured they wouldn't sell me anything since the minimum was $2K. Looks like I need to go back there and see what I need to order!

Beachnut - Yeah I think they have one more of the carpet in charcole grey it is like 30 bucks and at the dealer it is like 400 something since you car is black I figure thats what you got and as clean as your car is it deserves new carpet.

When you put your spoiler on how did you go about cutting the holes. I know how I am going to just wondering if you can give me a heads up of something that you would do different.

Thanks

That's funny dude! How did you know I wanted new carpet? LOL!

So how do the bottom of the pedestals follow the curves on the edges of the Pro's trunklid? Man, that thing looks JUST LIKE a GT spoiler! I can't tell from the pic, but mine had a threaded shaft that stuck down from the underside of the middle pedestal. It stuck right out of the fiberglass. I had to drill a hole for this. It helps hold down the middle of the spoiler. If you look inside your trunklid, you'll see two holes in the middle already drilled out through the framing. One hole was for the shaft I mentioned, the other hole was for the light bulb harness boot.

I made a drilling template first. It was kind of tricky, I hope you got one with the spoiler. I taped a bunch of 8x11 sheets of paper together end-to-end, stretched it and taped it to the trunklid, wrapping the ends of the template inside the lid and taping there too. I laid the spoiler down where I wanted it, traced the pedestals, then took everything off. I flipped the spoiler over and matched up the tracings to the pedestals and marked the holes in the template. Then I taped the template back down a second time. I marked my holes on the trunklid with a metal punch. I took the template off and tapped a little harder on all the marks with the punch again to make indentations for drilling.

For the holes, I bought two nice Bosch metal bits. I first used a 1/8" bit to drill pilot holes, followed by a 1/4" bit. For the center hole for the light harness, I used a 3/4" metal hole saw, but that was a tad too big - go with the next size down if you can. I drilled this hole from the inside of the trunklid in the factory cutout (you'll see what I mean). I had the hole saw already from installing the spoiler on my MPV, so I didn't want to buy another one. I ended up having to use black RTV to seal around the rubber harness boot that goes through the trunklid, but it worked ok.

For bolts, I went to Mazda and ordered four hex-head bolts that are used to bolt down the mud guards on a 3rd gen Pro. Don't ask how I figured that out, but they work great! The threading size is perfect and so is the length. Since they're hex head, you can use a socket to tighten them, but they also have a phillips cross for a screwdriver. If you got bolts with the spoiler, you obviously won't have to worry about that.

Sorry for the novel - hope that helps !

Thanks for the info.

Mine too has a shaft that sticks down from the middle pedestal. the bolts look like they are smaller than what I envisioned.

It fits the curve pretty well, the outside edge of the end pedestals have about a 3/16"-1/4" gap but if i flex the spoiler just a little they fit perfect. I think once it is bolted down it will match the trunk lid just right.

I didn't know you wanted carpet but from the way you are fixing up your pro you remind me alot of my vision for my pro (I want my stuff to look tight but factory) and I knew I wanted new carpet.

You know what I want? I want a center arm rest. Does anybody know of one that will fit in our cars or if it was an option, maybe one out of an mx3.

I couldv'e sworn I read somewhere that GroHarlem said the MX-3 center console would work (???)

I emailed Neville at Surplus Parts today with my laundry list ! In addition to the carpet, I asked about front seats, but they've got so many part numbers for seats on their website! Hopefully I wind up with the right ones for the LX. I'm also getting a key set since my driver's lock is just about shot. I was hoping I could find some rear calipers too, but I didn't see any listed. They're very expensive at the auto parts stores.

Good luck on the spoiler intstall. Let us know how it turns out.

Thanks!

So you say the mx3 one will. Hmmmm off to the junk yard I go!

I bothered the dealers around here to death figuring out exactly what different part # were.

Do you know of anyone who can get a list of mazda part numbers for different cars and years. It would help alot. I will be keeping my eye out for new things as they come out on their site.

On the key set make sure you get the right color one, for the most part it does not matter but it comes with the glove compartment lock and handle and if they are not the right color it won't look right. I never lock my glove box so if you don't either you don't even have to replace it.
