20mpg in a '93 auto DX?
Hi, I have a '93 DX with the four-speed automatic. (1.8L SOHC).
In regular city driving, I only seem to be getting about 20mpg.
On a 350mile trip, I got about 23-25mpg. On the same trip, my '90 Camry DX (2.0L (S/D?)OHC auto) got about 35MPG, doing 70-90mph most of the way.
I used to not think about it too much when I flaunted the small but very capable engine... But after being nice and gentle to it, it still seems to get about the same.
Am I doing anything wrong? Or do you guys get the same...I kinda expected more from this little baby.
It's in sound mechanical condition, no leaks, etc. The dealer never has said anything when it has gone in for service. They haven't looked at it much, though, as, I've had the car for 3 years, but I've only driven it 7000-8000miles!
Overall the car has been very good to me, although it had to get its front axle replaced (I guess its too easy to bottom out this car.) The axle that was in there though was some crappy after-market one, which is a whole 'nother story...
If you guys can tell me how your mileage is doing, if this is low maybe some tips?
Could the spark plug spacing be set wrong? I don't really know, I'm not that much of a gear-head

Change your spark plugs and wires, your fuel filter especially, and use some GOOD fuel system cleaner every time you change your oil. That will certainly improve things. A better breathing air filter couldn't hurt either.
In my car I rarely get below 30 mpg, even in the worst city driving (I only live 1 mile from work, and there are plenty of stops in between). I do have a 5spd though, and a couple hundred lbs. less.
