Question How Do I Bleed Brakes?

Can someone please give me a simple explanation of bleeding brakes? I'm planning on changing front pads/calipers and back shoes. Do I need to bleed every wheel that I work on? How do I know when I've got all the air bubbles out? Also, while i'm in there taking things apart is there anything else that I'll want to check/replace? Possibly the wheel cylinders on the back drums? I appreciate any input. Later!
