Update on My Intake
Well, as some of you know, i spent 50 bucks shipped on 3 inch intake from ebay with a 90 degree bend off the throttle body and no adapter plate to mount the massive air filter. my buddy (works at a speed shop) took a look at my car to piece out what i can do with this intake. as it turns out, he's going to take some measurements and order some bends off of JC Whitney or some other company and piece together for me a complete intake pipe with silicone adapters with mandrel bends, aiming for 2.5 inches. as it turns out, the three inch he indicates the same of what has been said here, on an engine such as mine, the ideal width is 2.5 inches, 3 inch will give you 'somewhat' better top end, but won't do much for the low end torque. well, even at that, we're going to order the intake adapter and throw that on with the cone filter, strip out the factory air box and that wierd silencer shroud thing going behind the radiator. i didn't realize how straight forward some of the advice given here can be, but 9 out of 10 butt-dyno's show, three inch AIN'T the way to go. even so, if i chose not to do this, i'm thinking about jumping on on protoss' suggestion of that group buy, but after all this crap, you get what you pay for, you've heard it from the mod's and the long time proheads, and now you hear it from me, 2.5 is the way to go, most ebay intakes are 3 inch. guess what i'm trying to say is, don't ignore what suggestions are given to you.. cause most likely, it'll save you the $50 bucks here and there

well, tomorrow, the 3 inch intake will take it's full spin, my adapter is coming in and i'll be doing a custom mounting on the VAF, totally ripping out the factory airbox and we'll see what kind of gains i can suck out of this large *** pipe. bottom line, if this don't work, then 2.5 inch piping is my answer, and in the future, i can figure out something about an extension piece to lower the filter down to the bumper. with all of this, i'm also going to change out my o2 sensor, as it sucks my ***.. actually, gas mileage is hurting, so can't go wrong with a soldering iron and a universal sensor for under 10 bucks . i'll keep you guys posted.

rx-7 vaf is in the works once i can find one, for now, i got my filter adapter and filter installed, my air box torn out, and the VAF bolted onto the chasis by a custom bracket. all in all, i guess i see gains in the upper end, but the butt dyno isn't the best way to judge this. as far as everyone saying that there is no reason to rip out their intake as the engine pulls cold air from the fender... this is true it pulls cooler air from the fender well, but i just can't see how this is efficient over a mandrel bent intake with a cold air extension on it. maybe gains are minimal and produce little bang for the buck, and you have to change the filter more often, but at least your air intake is that much more efficient as restrictions of the air box are cut down. anywho..
