Unhappy Stuttering acceleration

Hi there guys !!

Never tought i'd find a site about the 1st Gen, thanks to everybody who makes this possible !!!

I have a '92 Protege SE (as i see it, options package of the LX but with the SOHC) My car already has 236,000km, and still quite purring.

I wanna ask you guys if you've ever encoutered this problem : When i press the accelerator down all the way, the engine stutters all the way to ~2700Rpm. I bought the car 2 months ago and i gotta admit i'm a little pissed... It seems as tough it has a gas feeding problem, maybe an air intake too but that's kinda not likely. If i'm smooth with the acceleration, everything sounds and feels fine. A gaz line cleaner/injector cleaner/gas line anti-freeze was poured down the tank, but without any success.

What could be the cause of this stuttering ?

Thanks in advance and kudos to your site !!!

Have you tried replacing the fuel filter?

Or the plug wires. Or for holes in the intake.

My parents bought me the car when I was out of town in 1999. When I came back I was like :@ why did you get this car I hate it but I ended up really liking it

Ok, that's another story, but when I drove it off the lot it was exactly like that... I can't believe a dealer would sell it that way. Well I took it back and I don't know really what they did (I had no idea about cars back then), but they did change the spark plug wires, that was very noticable, as they put on the nice NGK wires which are bright blue That seemed to have helped the problem. I am going to go through my service records sometime soon to try and determine if jiffy lube owes me a lot of money... lol. So if I can find out I'll try and help

My car has the same problem. It's not fuel filter, fuel pump, injectors, fuel lines, plugs wires, spark plugs, distributor, rotor, coil or an intake leak. I checked all those and replaced half. My engine light finally came on, so I'm going to take it in to a friend to have him check it with his OBD I reader.

Lucky you! I don't have a code unfortunately, but I'm thinking it might have to do with either my catalytic being clogged or the other problem the car has with (I think) either the TPS or the IAC... or even the airsensor, because I burn rich and barely passed the emissions test with 94octane and idle at like 1400rpm

You can test for codes by taking either a paperclip or piece of wire and plugging it in the diagnostics box from the TEN to GND (I think there are 2 GND's and you use the one to the left of the box), then clicking on the ignition (not just accessories, turn it on without cranking the car) then watch the check engine light for the number of flashes. One long flash = 10, a short one = 1
ex. if the light stays on for a sec then blinks 5 times then you have a code 15 (I think that's o2 sensor), if it stays on for a sec 2 times then blinks twice then you have a code 22, etc

ODB1 doesen't need some fancy shmancy computer to diagnose

1400 is kinda high. i bet you have the same little throttle body leak a lot of people have. if you look you could see where the tb isnt tightened or just doesnt mate up perfect to the manifold. this has been known to fix a lot of our high idles. this would prolly fix the engine gasping problem too.

I'm not so sure about that because when I unplug the IAC, the idle goes right down

I had carbon deposits inside my distributor. I cleaned it and now I'm back to destroying rice. I think it was from my coil.

well when I first brought my 91 323 home, it did the exact same thing. Just popped the hood sprayed in some air intake clearner...'intake medic' i think its called, and a hole bunch of black crap came running out, and now, its just fine.

my just started with the same problem..but it might just be the exhasut being broken into 2 pieces between the CAT and muffler

The car stutter when accelerate, but not under COLD engine, which it's weired, once the engine warmed up, it starts to happen, and I hear the CAT PURRING like shiet...it's like someone is choking and trying to catch a breath. At one point, it was the big air intake hose cracked, but not this time...

I don't know yet, but I'll check for other things before I invest into the exhaust system...

I went and unplugged my IAC and my idle went higher. Funny thing you mentioned the exhaust leak though "merciless" . I think i might have and exhaust leak also. sometimes when i get in my car in the morning it will smell like propane gas would exhaust smell like this or is there just something in my trunk that is making this smell. Maybe there is a leak in the exhaust causing this.
