smoke coming from engine compartment

smoke coming from engine compartment
after driving the engine hard, blue smoke comes from the engine compartment. upon further investigation, I know its coming from the header heat sheild.
the smoke has an odour similar to when they are working on roads like tar burning.
any idea what could be causing this?
