low oil pressure causing problems?

well I think i am in the right section but I have the 1.8l dohc bp engine and latley it seems as if a rod has been knocking. so we took off everything to get to the oil pan and pulled it and checked the clearance of the rod with the crank and its .009, the others are .008 max is .014 and min is like .004. So its within spec, the rod cap looks good to. so we can't find anything wrong with it. we are thinking that its the oil pump going out and not giving enough oil pressure so that .001 difference is causing some problems. we already have ordered a oil pump, if this doesn't work then we are just going to get a rebuilt crank and resize that rod. do you all think its the oil pump problem or is there something else. oh btw it was knocking before we took it apart, now without a pan or pump it doesn't knock, and yes we did pull the asc. belts off before.
