lining up the cams HELP!

1) I had to change the water pump. DONE

2) Changed the timing belt because i wanted too. DONE

here is the problem when i went to line up the cams the letters that are have to line up would not line up. Maybe somebody before me had switched the cam gears around.

???So here is my question is there a way to line the cams up without using the cam gear and the letters on them.

Thanks for the help

so you can not put the left gear on the right side and the right gear on the left side.

i am pretty sure you can flip flop them, as both have an "I" AND an "E" on them. The "key" Jesse is refering to is a boomerang shape in the center and there is a corresponding "pin" on the end of the camshafts that fit into this key. So i am pretty sure you can use them on either cam.

the left one will line up with "I" and the right will line up with "E" (pointing UP) when the crank gear marks are lined up.

just in case, "I" = intake and "E" = exhaust

So soon you forget, Darryl.

Yes, the cam gears are interchangeable, and identical. As long as you line them up with the "I" on the rear (intake) cam straight up to the indicator, and the "E" on the front (exhaust) cam. There are dowel pins on the cams that line up with the slots on the gears.
