KL-ZE installation

I've pondered the KL-ZE vs. BPT...and I think if the KL is just as easy as a bolt-in, I may go with a 6. Plus with all the things that come stock with the KL-ZE, it's clear that it's ready for a turbo or supercharging. With as MUCH weight as the BPs and 200 horse, a RWD V-6 is like a dream come true for us Protege owners. I jsut want to know, and realize this HAS been ina previous post, but I want confirmation from someone that has seen it, or someone that is very knowledgeable: Is the KL just a bolt-in with little modification besides the crossmember mount and the axles? Or does it require some more mods? Also the gauge cluster...is there a rewire and a gauge cluster swap that would work in a '91 Protege DX? Obviosuly the redline and everything would screwed up...just getting a diff. tach face would fix that if I cared THAT much...but just looking for a better 'cluster. If anyone has websites that would help, it's greatly appreciated.

well, the R and F are close to each other on the keyboard, so my guess is that it's a typo, as there are no RWD powered by the KL, in the US anyway.

KL swap

- engine
- transmission
- ECU
- axles
- tranny crossmember
- i think you also need the brake rotors and control arms

all from a Probe GT/MX6/626 or MX3 GS

99.9% certain the Protege LX cluster will work fine. Will also work fine swapped into your DX.

now the question is, there might be a few pin swaps on the Protege's ECU harness plug(s) Not totally sure, but i remember hearing something about it, might be for a different thing completely, but it rang a bell as i typed this....

lol. I WISH I could have RWD on aa KL-ZE. How much psi do you think your could push on a forced induction KL-ZE? I know it's not a steel block, so it's not as strong as some other swaps (the BP's, namely) at least I would assume, but I'm pretty new to this crap, so I know nothing about typical engine alloys. Also I hear something that sounds very tempting that would make me shy away from the KL and go for BP...supposedly (I think ) it's the head on the new Miatas in Japan have a system very similar to VTEC. I forget the name right now...I wish I could find the text...I have NO clue what phase it's in...but I heard something vague about maybe swapping the head on the BP with that system. Anyone have more info or can solidify this a bit? Like I said, I'm pretty new to this stuff. Bear with me.

I think I'd definately go with some higher performance injectors. I hear the stock ones are rediculously weak for any application other than stock.

Ehh...it'd be nice...but I think I'm better off with a BP. Lots more potential for my money and less bs. I'm trying to avoid buying a BP from corksport...and finding one in a junkyard or something. Hopefully find someone that doesn't know the value of what they have...although junkyard owners usually know to the penny what everything in their cars are worth =/

Saying 240whp in a FWD mazda isnt enough is ridiculous. I have ~160whp and I bet I'm faster than 95% of the cars on this board. A KLZE turbo Protege would be a solid 12 second car, trapping near the one-teens.

but with 160whp you must be pushing close to 250-260lbs of torque....?

thats what i'm talking about...

Braden reached about 230-235whp IIRC when he was tuning the BPT turboge, and around to 260lbs of torque @ like 3500rpm. but the VJ 20 was maxxed at near 20-25psi and i think he went down to 225whp for reliability and near 15psi. Thats a ton of power to deal with, especially with an open diff...he was constantly fighting for grip....but your gonna want to upgrade to beefy axles, espcially if an LSD is used, i've seen some twisted splines even with out.....

And all that torque was good for what? mid 14's?
Not a wide enough powerband for the gearing/weight of the vehicle.

A really oversized and overpriced paperweight, which would really stink up your office.
