When Do You Throw The "Other" Rims On?

Well, winter here in Calgary starts in October, and last friday (yes, I was actually snowed in and took the day off school...) I decided to put my stock rims / tires back on for the winter. Given, the car is now fugly as hell, but at least the ride is a little smoother and I can get some grip on the snow.

Just wanted to know when the rest of you put your winter rims and / or tires back on? Is it the first sign of snow, or a certain date?

sorry that im ignorant on this topic, but do you really have to put your stock tires and rims back on before winter, i mean why cant you just roll all year round. what will happen if you ride on your new wheels/tires through the cold season?

Well Pete, since I'm rollin' on 205/40ZR's, with a performance "V Tread" design, you could imagine that there wouldn't be any traction in winter. The stock tires are quite a bit softer as well... Any all season tire will be better suited to winter than a performance street tire would.

Hope that answers your question.

Well, I gave in and put my sweet rims back on. Man, do I ever get alot of looks! I've got about 2 weeks left, (give or take) of no snow. Then, it's re-uglification of the car time!

hehe, no i didnt take the lowering springs off. i take my wheels off because i don't want them ruined. out here, we use a lot of gravel. and as you know, rock chips suck. ;D especially on a set of wheels that cost a few paychecks. so, i'll just roll stock until it gets warm. not a big deal.

when you say stock rims you mean the 16" 5 spoke alum? I've been considering buying a set of 14" steel rims for winter.. Talk about uglyification

anyway anyone else running steel wheels? If you're running stock rims what tires do you have on them. Thought it was hard to get a 16" winter tire that would fit the Pro5..

thanks
