center caps necessary for alloy/aftermarket wheels?

I have two sets of OEM alloy or aftermarket wheels that are missing center caps. The aftermarket set actually didn't come with any, and the OEM ones were lost/stolen.

Now without taking looks into consideration, do the center caps serve any practical purpose that would encourage owners of such wheels to seek out replacement/fabricated center caps? Is there any danger associated with water, snow, ice or mud getting onto that part of the hub (the center)?

Thanks in advance,

-Drew
