My problem with DiscountTire is that they are not near me, so I woudn't be able to get them to rotate them for me. Do you live near them in Scottsdale, AZ ? Do you work for them? LOL. Just kidding. I have a $50.00 deal with a local tire store for the life of my cars...free rotate and balance....on both of my cars, so I'll be using them. Thanks for the info but it really doesn't help me here in East Tennessee.

www.tirerack.com has khumo's for $62 plus shipping...

i've ordered many tires from them.

and if there is a discount tire in your state you'll have to pay sales tax...w/ tire rack you won't...

well, if you live in TX you have to pay taxes. and shipping isn't $38...so evan if it's $10/tire it's still onlt $72...

and MadeInJapan, if there is a discount tire store in Tenn, you'll have to pay taxes. discout cannot compete w/ tire rack w/ prices cuz there are too many states w/ discount tire stores...and if your state has a discount tire store, you'll have to pay taxes...

either way it'a cheaper via tire rack, and i;ve order 6-7 sets of tire thru them w/o a problem.

i think we are on different pages, i'm not talking about going into a discounttire, i'm talking about ording from there warehouse. tirerack has them for 79 a piece and it cost 33 bucks to ship a set and discounttiredirect has them for 89 w/no shipping. neither company has taxes. you save 2 bucks a tire through tirerack so its just a matter or preference. but if you do have a local discounttire, you can order these tires from the internet and the store will warranty the roadside hazzard program. the only reason they are more expensive at the store is b/c it includes mounting and balancing.

Thanks guys for all of the information. Maybe there should be a new thread: TireRack vs. DiscountTire....anyway, There are no DiscountTires in my area, and even if there were, sales tax here is 9.25%, so that would be out. Like I said, I already have a rotate and balance deal, so don't need to consider that. I still haven't sent off for my tires, but will soon. Read some of the previous thread on Sumitomo tires....torn between those and the Kuhmo's now. What do you think?

Tires

I'm going thru all this with my 1999 ES, rim size is 195,55,15. I ran the stock Bridgestones RE92 to 42,000 on one pair... the 2nd pair lasted to 52,000!.. well over the ratings. Other than some issues with hydroplane tendencies, these were really good tires. I run a pair of the Kumho's ECSTA 712's and I like them for the dry and wet as a 3 season tire, no snow, they don't like cold to well but for the money, they seem to be ok. I have read of Kumho's falling apart in some posts, so be leary. They tend to break loose pretty easy until they're warmed up, but seem to hold up in the turns and have good water handling @ 10k. I shopped for new tires extensively, try looking at the Sumitomo's, Falken 512's, Continental contact sport2's, Toyo Proxes FH4, Dunlaps Sport A2 and 5000, 8000, 9000.. the 8000-9000 are summer only. All season, BF goodrich touring TA VR4. I still like the Bridgestone RE92 save for the cost and it's tendency to drift in a hydroplane. Not sure if these come in your sizes either but most are fitting 50- 60, 16's.

Wow, I'm glad to see they fixed this section of Protegeclub. It was down for the longest time. I'm getting my rotation balancing done at FreeService Tire. There's one out west at Walker Springs, but the one I go to is North Broadway. If you're interested just go in and ask them for the lifetime rotation and balance deal (believe it was $50 when I got my Protege in the Spring of 2001). It is for the time you own your car and idependent of the tires you have on it. You from Knoxville? If you are, TireRack will drop ship tires to Jack's Wholesale Tire in Corryton..that's out near Gibb's, past the high school. They install for $11.00 each and get rid of old tires for free (none of this 1 or 2 dollar tire desposal fee). I usually do that at Jacks, drive on the tires for 1000 miles and then take the car to Free Service to check the balance, wheel torquing, etc. before actually rotating them, which I do every 5000 miles. Using Free Service Tire I'm getting 40,000 out of the stock Dunlap 5000's.

yes i understand, but if there is a discount tire in that state (which is pretty likely) evan w./ mail order you have to pay state taxes on them. tire rack has like 3 warehouse locations...and those 3 states where they are located are the only states that you'll have to pay taxes.

Just wanted to thank everyone for their comments. I did end up ordering a set of the Kumho's from Tirerack after all. I was sort of holding off because they are suppose to suck in the snow and we just had one of those once every 5 year 6 inch snow falls and sub degree weather this week. I figure (keeping my fingers crossed) that we are finished with this weather. If not, then I suppose I might try to find some of those "tire cables" like the U.S. Postal service uses on their vehicles to get me through such a time. I found a pair of them for about $30 here:
chttp://www.tirechain.com/P195-50R-16.htm Can anyone tell me if this is even a good idea? Thanks again.
