Wooo!! My shop manual's in!

You know, my experience with Jarman Mazda has been great thus far!

I ordered the shop manual from them about 3 weeks ago, and I just got a call that it came in! How's that for service? And to top it all off, it cost me all of 90$ The only catch for getting it at such a sweet price - no binder or anything to store it in. It's just a huge 5 inch stack of paper.

Next up... RACTIVE!! Name's already on the list. Should only be a couple weeks for that one too! They said 160$ installed, but I think that number's out to lunch.. I think it'll be more like 160 + install (which I'm doing myself anyway)

Anyway - just had to say how happy i am with the service at Jarman, and that i got my shop manual after only 3 weeks at a SWEET SWEET price.

I can remember when I bought the shop manual for my 1990 Protege (covers all 1.6L 323 and 1.8L Protege models except for the DX AWD)...it was only $20...ah...those were the days...pre GST too.
Nice! I remember those days...

Only reason I'm excited that I got it for 90 bucks is that buddy that sold it to me I think screwed up. When I asked the first time for a price he went and looked it up and printed off a quote for $90. I asked him if that was correct cuz I knew the price was supposed to be closer to 200. He looked it up again and sure enough it was listed at 203$ but since he had already quoted me the 90$ he gave it to me for that.

I don't know if maybe there was a price drop or something, but I know that they were like 180+ just a month ago...

Yeah, but you wouldn't be morally opposed to letting a buddy borrow that for a couple of days would you?

Maybe a buddy who has a scanner...

I got the Ractive intake installed on my car this weekend. I'm pretty happy with it. The only problem we had was the intake is really close to the brake cylinder and will rub (making a really horrid noise). A little adjustment and no problems. Talk to Jim at Jarman, he should be able to help you avoid any problems by showing you were to install the bracket on the engine.

I think the difference between the Ractive intake and the other more expensive models is the fit. After all the thing is just a couple pieces of aluminium pipe, some fittings and a filter. Not rocket science.

It looks good and sounds mean Therefore it must add at least 20whp. Honestly I don't know if there is a power difference or not, I'd like to think so...but probably not

And to stay completely off topic...

I drove an 02 ES Sedan that has the Mazda Speed exhaust, the intake and exhaust cams, a Ractive intake and is also lowered (H&R I think). I'm impressed. There is certainly a difference, seems to pull a little stronger through the entire RPM range. And handles very nicely. I beleive they are going to Dyno the car in the near future, so it will be nice to see if my *** lied to me

That's it

Who sold you the shop manual at Jarman?

It was Darryl, but I talked to Jim on the phone today. I guess I do get a binder with it after all! He said it was a split order and the binder came in today! Sweet! He also said he'll have an ETA for me for when the Ractive should be in when I go to pick up the binder.

Does the bracket come with the intake, or is that something I am going to need to custome make?

I'm gonna have a rainbow of color under my hood! Red strut bar, yellow intake bits, blue body color.. maybe i should get green hoses to complete the ensemble!

How detailed are these shop manuals? I bought a manual from Autozone for my old Grand Am, and it was very detailed. It gave you a general idea how to change the alternator for example, but it didnt give you steps or detailed instructions.

Most the the diagrams where exploded views, which didnt explain what goes on/off first.

Anyone have a sample of the manual. Maybe one of the pages scanned so I can see how detailed it is?

It comes with a bracket. Basically a flat piece of steel with some holes in it and a 90degree bend at one end that hooks into the pipe clamp. Not the best system in the world, would have been better if it actually bolted right to the intake pipe. But it seems pretty secure. If you go to Jarman they have a Yellow P5 in the showroom with one installed, you can see how the bracket had to be bent to work properly. I'll take a look at mine today to see how far the intake has to be from the break cylinder to stop the rattle/rub. I'm guessing about 1/2 - 3/4 of an inch since the engine moves on the mounts a fair bit, especially when starting and stopping the engine. If I think of it I will take some pictures of mine and highlight the area where the intake was contacting the break cylinder, it is easy to see as there are scratches in the intake.

Check out this page, this looks like the exact same kit. : http://www.joesworld.ca/Protege5/Ractive/

He connected the bracket from the MAF to the battery support, instead of the way mine is done. I don't think what he did was a good idea. The engine/intake will move a fair amount, and it might not be a good idea to anchor it to the engine compartment. I don't know if this would cause stress on the intake and fittings over time.

The best thing about the intake is when you shut the engine off, you hear a hiss that lasts a couple of seconds. Hey I am easily impressed!

These are the books that the mechanics at the dealerships use to take your car apart. They're VERY detailed. Like I said - 1000+ double sided pages. I'll scan a couple pages for you guys to see what it's like when I get home tonight.

Yeah I saw that p5 sitting in the showroom yesterday when i was there. I used it as a demo to point out the heatshield bolt i'm missing too, but they have to "special order" it in

Thanks for snapping the pics when u have a chance! Can't wait for the intake to come in...

As promised here are the pics that I spoke of:

The red arrows are pointing to where the intake was rubbing/knocking against the break cylinder.

And my orange (was supposed to turn out red ) calipers. I think I will leave them this way for now, it is kind of growing on me. Excuse the rusty looking break rotors, I just washed the car and hadn't driven it yet

There ya go, if you have any questions let me know...sorry for the thread hijack

The manuals are very detailed, but there still is a lot left out, you see the people using the manuals are factory trained so there is stuff left out that would be common knowledge to a mazda tech. As for the price of the manuals well that is the price SORRY no screw up.

If anyone wants info I would be more then happy to send you what you need.

As for the special order parts, well you can't stock everything
