If you want chinese, you gotta ask the chinese member lol. I agree with Dale that Silver Dragon is a good place to go, probably the most popular chinese restaurant in Calgary. Treasures of China is also a good place to go. If you want sushi, Sakana is a good choice as it is good and in the downtown/chinatown area. However if you want the best of the best and like sushi a lot (enough for all you can eat) head up to Yamato right by northland mall. Its a good distance away, but if you enjoy sushi, its well worth the journey.

Hey 52nr - I have heard others say that about Yamoto as well, but I've been to both Sakana and Yamoto in the last 3 weeks, and I wasn't overly impressed with Yamoto the last time (I thought it was really good the time before that I went though). So I'm sticking with Sakana for now as the stand by. :dunno:

Also - you're right - gotta ask the Chinese where the good Chinese food is :)

Oh yeah, there are two Ethiopian places on 10th Street in the NW. I have gone to the one on Kensington and 10th, it is damn good. How did this food thing get started anyway? Who did it? That's it! Let's hog tie 'em!:D

Mmm ... didn't catch on to this interesting thread until now. Speaking from experience (I ate out for about 6 months working on a project in Calgary last year), here are my fav's in Calgary:

Chinese - none (My fav used to be the restaurant across from Treasures of China in Chinatown. I was closed down since last Oct & have not found a place that lives up to my Chinese food standards yet. Mind you, I have high standards coming from Hong Kong & Toronto.)
Japanese - Sakana on 2nd Ave for sushi, Misai (way out near the airport for Japanese 'pub grub', undecided for noodles
Vietnamese - Y2K Saigon (so far)
Pub with good food - Brewster @ Eau Clair
Pub - Ceilli's on Stephen Ave
West Coast Casual - Joey Tomato & Earl's
Casual - Nellie's and Arden Diner (still have to try Galaxie & Diner Deluxe ...)
Kebabs - Atlas on 16 Ave
East Indian - undecided
West Indian - Roti Hut (so far ... haven't tried Joy's & Stranger's yet)
Montreal style bagel - Wayne's in Kensinton
Prime Rib - Owl's Nest @ Westin (don't like Struggler's Inn as much & still have to try Carver's)
Others - Marathon (Kensinton or 17 Ave) has pretty good Ethiopian food; heard lots of good things about Sultan's Tent but can't get a seat; Phillip's have good ice cream (esp. for those who have not seen the cool ice cream places in Vancouver & Toronto); ...

I guess I got carried away & ramble on too much ... :p I would love to see more suggestions from locals as I am trying to explore more places now that I moved here!

Beef helps you spell (j/k) :D

My wife has a nut/legume allergy, so we definitely don't do the vegetarian thing.

Orange - Galaxy and Diner Deluxe both rock, but they are definitely different than Nellie's. Try them out.

For those of you who haven't found 'good' Chinese yet, I definitely recommend Central Grand in the Chinese shopping center. I don't know authentic from not, but the food is always fresh and good, and the stuff in the 2 menus they don't normally give us white folks looks pretty interesting.

You got to ask yourself,

Should I make this a list of places to eat on the website?

Sorry B, I couldn't help to poke a little fun! :D

anyone here tried Spolumbos sausages? Their location near DT has a mini deli inside, its got moderate prices, but soooo good

I havent been to Yamato in a while for all you can eat sushi...hmmm better go and try it out again...however my uncle has just opened another sushi place downtown near Sushi Tokyo. Its actually on 5th street, if you turn left on centre, its right beside the National rent a car. Its called Fujiyama...its pretty expensive tho, but they are just getting into the scene...all of the chinese papers have 20% discount coupons!
