Winnipeger on the way to Calgary
Hey Calgary Protege Club,
I won a trip to come visit your fine city. I know my way around Calgary a little since I used to live in Alberta, however Im going to need some directions since my girlfriend has some places she wants to visit. When I find out where Im staying can someone give me some simple directions? (Make them super simple, Im kinda slow) :D |
Post the places where you are and where you want to go. I'm sure we'll all pitch in what we know!
|
Im not sure what Hotel Im in just yet.
The places I will be visiting will be: The Zoo, The Calgary Tower, The Saddledome, The Colosseum and (god forbid) IKEA. |
Originally posted by 90&00 Protege Mapquest...or PM. Kuba, depending on how nice a hotel you can snag - anywhere downtown would be good. The Sheraton Eau Claire is nice (only about a year old) and is really central (can walk to the zoo, the Calgary Tower, Kensington, and even the Saddledome if your in a pinch) from there, and there are plenty of places to eat very close by. Otherwise, if money is an object, you will need to drive to all the places, and stay in motel village or up towards the airport. When you find out where you are staying (or just want some feedback...), PM me and I'll try and answer your specific questions. Dale. |
Thanks alot for your help. I think Im staying at the downtown Sheriton. But I wont know for a couple of days.

That's a great location! Enjoy it!

I need to know how to get to The Saddledome, The Zoo, IKEA, The Colloseum and a nice resturant to go to that is fairly upscale but wont cost me an arm and a leg. Thanks for your help!!! Why the Colloseum? Its way out of your way, I recomend The paramount. as its newer and shows things Lord of the Rings in the IMAX theater All the places you want to go (Except the Colloseum) are very close to the LRT, so you might want to think about that. But if you want to drive, here are some directions. For the resturant, what kind of food are you looking for that will help narrow it down. The Delta is between McLeod Trail SE (Northbound one way) and 1st St SE AKA, McLeod Trail SE (Southbound one way). To the saddledome: take McLeod - South, (1st ST SE) stay in the middle lanes. After about 8 blocks you will see the stampede area to your left, continue south. (it will look like you are going past the stampede, don't worry) You will see McLeod trail south and north come together, the next set of lights after the roads come together go left (be in the leftmost turn lane) on to spiller road. You will go over some train tracks and see an entrance to the stampede on your left. To the zoo: leave the Delta onto 4th (this is the road you came in on) and go left (its one way, please don't go right) turn left on to McLeod Trail - South, stay in the left most lane, turn left again at the next set of lights. Move into the second most right lane (relax you have about 3 blocks to do this) stay in that lane. You will be taken on an flyover onto memorial drive - east. Stay in the lane you end up in (on the flyover there will be one lane to the right, it ends right after the flyover) stay in that lane, follow the road signs to the zoo parking. To IKEA: Same as the Zoo, but don't take the zoo exit, instead stay on Memorial - East. You will go over deerfoot, stay on memorial. After deerfoot, you will go up a hill then pass a set of traffic lights (28th ST), be left hand lane and take the left turn at (its a seperated turn lane, if you jsut keep going left you'll be ok) the next set of light (36th St.) go around the conor and left at the next set of lights. You will be int he IKEA parking lot. spend 20 minutes to find parking :D Colloseum, get on McLeod South and stay there you are going to the deep south (past fish creek if your looking at a map). 40 minutes later you will see an exit for shawville blvd. I believe you want the next right turn. Here is a link to an online transit map, it has street markings so it might help. http://www.calgaryemaps.com/emaps/Tr...PDF/index.html Hope this helps, Brian |
Thanks alot! That really helps.
As you suggested, Im not going to rent a car, but your directions are still helpful! thanks! |
Originally posted by KubaSpeed Thanks alot! That really helps. As you suggested, Im not going to rent a car, but your directions are still helpful! thanks! If you want things to check out, I suggest, the Devonians Gardins (4th floor TD Square (on 7th ave)) mayb ethe science center, if the weatehr is nice, walk along the bow river, eau claire, etc. For food, can't beat the Calgary Tower for scenary, but for other places, all depends what you are looking for. |
Originally posted by KubaSpeed Is there anyone who can give me a hand?? Looks like the directions given here are about the same as what I gave you :) Also, except for the theatres, most of the places would be a close cab ride for you. For restaurants, let us know what sort of food/atmospohere/price ranges you are thinking of, and I'm sure we will all have suggestions. Dale. |

Thanks to the both of you.
Im going to the Colloseum because my girlfriend has free passes. As for food, we just want to go to a resturant that is a little nicer than something like Boston Pizza or Perkins, but not super formal or pricey. Just a nice average resturant that we dont have in Winnipeg. |
Down town there is a few things you can try. In the Eau Clair area, The old sagetti factory, joey tomatoes, brewsters. Also, on 4th st. (you might want a car, its a bit of a walk) there are some nice places, I highly recomend the 4th St. Rose.
Near the Colloseum, there is East Side Marios which is nice/unique. I know there are more, but nothing is sticking out in my mind right now. |

Originally posted by KubaSpeed You guys are awesome! Thanks alot. Ive decided not to rent a car, so I guess Ill have to figure out how to get to places via the C train Taxi's are good. If you want, there is a Buget rent-a-car place just up the block from the delta (you will probably see if it you walk to the train) |

If you want chinese, you gotta ask the chinese member lol. I agree with Dale that Silver Dragon is a good place to go, probably the most popular chinese restaurant in Calgary. Treasures of China is also a good place to go. If you want sushi, Sakana is a good choice as it is good and in the downtown/chinatown area. However if you want the best of the best and like sushi a lot (enough for all you can eat) head up to Yamato right by northland mall. Its a good distance away, but if you enjoy sushi, its well worth the journey.

Oh yeah, there are two Ethiopian places on 10th Street in the NW. I have gone to the one on Kensington and 10th, it is damn good. How did this food thing get started anyway? Who did it? That's it! Let's hog tie 'em!:D

Mmm ... didn't catch on to this interesting thread until now. Speaking from experience (I ate out for about 6 months working on a project in Calgary last year), here are my fav's in Calgary:
Chinese - none (My fav used to be the restaurant across from Treasures of China in Chinatown. I was closed down since last Oct & have not found a place that lives up to my Chinese food standards yet. Mind you, I have high standards coming from Hong Kong & Toronto.) Japanese - Sakana on 2nd Ave for sushi, Misai (way out near the airport for Japanese 'pub grub', undecided for noodles Vietnamese - Y2K Saigon (so far) Pub with good food - Brewster @ Eau Clair Pub - Ceilli's on Stephen Ave West Coast Casual - Joey Tomato & Earl's Casual - Nellie's and Arden Diner (still have to try Galaxie & Diner Deluxe ...) Kebabs - Atlas on 16 Ave East Indian - undecided West Indian - Roti Hut (so far ... haven't tried Joy's & Stranger's yet) Montreal style bagel - Wayne's in Kensinton Prime Rib - Owl's Nest @ Westin (don't like Struggler's Inn as much & still have to try Carver's) Others - Marathon (Kensinton or 17 Ave) has pretty good Ethiopian food; heard lots of good things about Sultan's Tent but can't get a seat; Phillip's have good ice cream (esp. for those who have not seen the cool ice cream places in Vancouver & Toronto); ... I guess I got carried away & ramble on too much ... :p I would love to see more suggestions from locals as I am trying to explore more places now that I moved here! |

OK. This thread took a turn at Deerfoot...hey wait, Deerfoot Trail has no corners. Whoa...

Originally posted by mesoh GO VEGITERIAN!!!:D My wife has a nut/legume allergy, so we definitely don't do the vegetarian thing. Orange - Galaxy and Diner Deluxe both rock, but they are definitely different than Nellie's. Try them out. For those of you who haven't found 'good' Chinese yet, I definitely recommend Central Grand in the Chinese shopping center. I don't know authentic from not, but the food is always fresh and good, and the stuff in the 2 menus they don't normally give us white folks looks pretty interesting. |
