Window tinting in Edmonton.

Hi All,

I have a Silver P5 and am going to be getting my windows tinted this thursday. I have a couple of questions...

I am going to have Supertint do the work on my car. They have been recommended by a friend that works at a dealer. Anyone have any experience with these guys?

I will be having all the windows (except windshield) tinted. I'm thinking about 35% for everything except the front driver's and passanger's windows. Those I am thinking of doing 50%. Would this be a good combo? I would like to minimize the chances of getting a ticket, but at the same time I like the look of all the windows being tinted.

For the people that have tint on all the windows, have you had any hassles from the police? What % do you have done?

I originally wasn't going to have the front windows done, but I've been watching cars for the last couple of weeks and see a lot of illegally tinted windows. I assume that these people aren't getting stopped all the time.

I guess the worst that will happen is I will get a ticket and have to remove the tint.

Thanks!

Jay

okay well all our windows are tinted I'm not sure of the % because we got it like that, (and with painted brake calipers) but we haven't had any problems from what I heard you only reallt get in crap for it if your already being pulled over for something else.. it's a waste of thier time to pull people over jsut for tint, so our plan is if we ever get pulled over we are gonna put both front windows down before he gets to us..

You're getting the EXACT same tint % i'm planning on getting!

I've got my P5 booked in for May 21 at European Auto Tint on Calgary Trail (Thanks Richard!!! ). It's a super shop and I was VERY impressed when I had the tour to see everything he does. Gonna cost me an arm and a leg to get all my windows AND the moonroof done, but from the kind of work he does, I think it's well worth it. What sold me is that he removes the windows to do a QUALITY job and then bakes them under a heat lamp to dry and set the film.

320 for all 9 windows, the moonroof and a sunvisor-type band across the windshield. That's with the metallic-based film. Check to make sure your place is using metallic and NOT CHARCOAL!! (unless of course you want purple windows in a few years!)

Thanks for the replys.

My appointment at Supertint is tomorrow. Even though I haven't seen the work first hand my friend that works at Jarman raves about the work they do. Jarman uses Supertint for everything they have done, and I was able to get a bit of a deal through them.

Here is their website if anyone is interested: http://www.supertint.com

I'll let you know how it turns out!

Don't worry about the front windows, I've got 65% in the front and 90% in the back and the city cops don't care' just don't give them a reason. The only place you have to worry about is Sherwood Park they have nothing better to do but bug you for stuff like that.

Law says 30% in front so what's an extra 35%, looks great.

Not ture the law says that you can't have any type of film on the front two windows but if your windows are made dark then you can have what ever you want. So as long as you don't go to dark and you stay out of sherwood park you'll be fine.

Maaaaan!!! This has been brought up a MILLION times on this board already, but hey, what's one more?

From the INTERNATIONAL WINDOW FILM ASSOCIATION :

CANADIAN WINDOW TINTING RULES & LAWS

as of 3/2001
PROVINCE - ALBERTA
TYPE - FILM
WINDSHIELD - 15 CM
F. SIDE - NO
B. SIDE - ANY
B. SIDE - ANY
REAR - ANY

It is ILLEGAL to have ANYTHING OTHER THAN CLEAR front side windows in Alberta, whether they are factory or not. It doesn't matter if it's a film, dye or dirt. Anyone who tells you differently doesn't have their facts straight. The only thing is that cops in Edmonton have better things to do than pull over every car that has tinting up front so you can tint your front and take the chance that you MAY be pulled over one day...

Richard!

Where oh where did you find that? I spent the better part of an hour today searching for the traffic act online, but to no avail. Can you post the URL? I'd like to read more and see what else we're doing illegally in our cars!

It's done!

I took my car to Supertint. They used Llumar Centaur film on all 9 windows. I had 35% done on the 2 front windows and 15% done on all additional. At least I am assuming this is the %vlt. I picked from samples with out knowing the numbers, on the work order the part number on the tint is PT35GH and PT15GH. I basically chose one shade lighter than limo for the back and one shade darker than the lightest for the front.

I have to say that the front turned out a little darker than I thought, but it looks fantastic. Having a black interior sure makes it seem like the windows are quite dark.

Over all I am happy with the results. Right now in some spots on the windows it looks like there is a bit of spotty haze. According to the care instruction card that I got this is to be expected as the tint cures:

- DO NOT use abrasive pads cleaners or industrial stengh glass cleaners.

- Use a soft loth with a mild soap and water solutions. That's it!

-Allow film to cure for 3 to 5 days before lowering windows.

-REMEMBER: You new film takes 2-3 weeks to fully cure. You may see some haze or condensation during this period.

Once I wash my car tonight I will have a really good look and if anything doesn't look perfect, back it goes. As a precaution the night before I took my car into get done I video taped the entire interior of the car focusing on door panels, windows and dust caps. Just incase there was damage I would have proof that the car was in perfect condition before I brought it in. So if there is anything wrong they will hear about it

The total cost was $340.90(incl GST). It was a little higher than expected. First the quote I got was for the sedan not the P5, so the price went up to cover the extra windows. The second price was for the Jet Black charcol based film, which I upgraded (for a cost of 59.00). So the final price was for Llumar Centaur film. I'm not sure if I got burned or not. What are you gonna do?? It's only money right?

All of the window film was computer cut, using a type of plotter. And I think it shows as that aspect of the job they did is flawless. The did not remove the door panels, which I thought they would do. The logic they used to justify this made a little bit of sense...there is more risk to the interior pieces of your car if they remove them. Things not fitting the way they should, parts missing. Bottom line is they didn't screw anything up, and I was prepared if they did.

Sorry for the long post, but I though this information might be useful for others.

Congrats! I have just over a week to wait for mine to get done.

Sounds like you got a tiny bit hosed a bit on the price.

Euro Auto Tint's doing all the windows, plus a visor on the windshield AND my moonroof for 320+GST

At first I thought that was pretty pricey compared with prices for other vehicles, so I'm glad I'm not the only one paying in the 300+ range for tinting!!

Post pics when u get a chance!

I think part of the reason the P5 is more than others is the amount of windows.

I have no problem paying top $$$ as long as the product and the service are good. The only thing that makes me feel good about the money I have spent is Llumar is considered the best when it comes to window tint. If you put any stock in what mazdaspeedwest says in the thread http://www.protegeclub.com/forum/sho...5&pagenumber=2 SolarGard is not recommended.

I guess what it comes down to is how you like it and if they did a good job.

Hell I spend extra $$$ going to the Centaur even when I only intend on driving this car 3 years.

I hope to have pictures up tonight!

Just got my tint done today.... 30% all around (including moonroof). Looks nice! With black interior, the tint looks pretty dark from the outside, but looks perfect from the inside (not too dark at all).

Here are some pics of the tint:
