bushings n' stuff

I'm trying to learn here. What is the advantage of the bushings and shortened shifters etc?

short shifter = quicker shifts/shorter throw and it looks cooler
shifter bushings = firm shifts, there is less "Play", feels more solid basicaly. the stock rubber bushings compress to easily
