Top Speed

I was talking with some people the other day and top speed came up. I was wondering if anyone knows the top speed for a 2001 Protege LX 2.0...

thanks

yup, 133mph (drag limited) with a good tailwind, a power adder, and some weight reduction you could see 135-140. I hit 138 in my MSP on I-20 leaving Georgia.

Car & Driver and other magazines have gotten about 116-118 MPH, corrected for speedo error, altitude, temperature, and they run the car both directions to cancel wind and grade effects also. 133 sounds awful high for level ground and no mods. On a positive note, they achieved the top speed in 5th gear, unlike those wheezy Hondas that go faster in 4th than they do in 5th because they suck.

I made it to 180kph in my car, not exactly sure how much that is in miles though.

90 is 55; so double that and you've got 110 mph.

I hit 210km/h or 130mph in my MSP and the car was still pulling, so 140 is probably tops..

Maybe someday I'll find enough smooth empty highway to test it all the way...

rustychops41, I take offense to the Honda remark because it's bullshit. No offfense but in a 1/'4 mile run my SOHC VTEC 92' hatch would have taken my new protege. But handling wise and overall ergonomics the Protege wins hands down.

I never said they were slower, in 1/4 mile or top speed, just that many cars nowadays attain their top speed in 4th gear, instead of 5th, and of course at much higher RPMs. I agree the Mazda Proteges are not good 1/4 mile cars. To clarify my earlier proclaimation, the 2000 and up Honda Civic sedans are a big disappointment. A Car & Driver 10 car Econobox shootout from 2002 comment: "Something new from Honda- A loser". The Civic LX finished 5th out of 10, the Protege LX won the comparo. BTW their acceleration times were nearly identical, although it was a Civic LX, not an EX. My deepest apologies for using the word "suck."

i only have an exaust on my car and have achieved 220 km/h on nearly flat ground...very slight wind with me and slight down hill. that is also where the car redlines and governs out.

I know my honda civic sedan was faster in 4th than 5th....it wouldn't do ANYTHING above 90mph in 5th. The car just didn't have enough muscle to push 5th gear. The protege however does not have that problem. My car pulls like mad in 5th gear. A good exhaust will also help it to breathe better when breaking the law badly.

I was driving on I-67 in Arkansas Friday night, well Saturday morning, and the needle was touching 140mph. My car actually shut off once I got to that point. Is that supposed to happen? And another thing, my stock kenwood's bass was acting up a few weeks ago and wasn't sounding right. I left my lights on all night and my battery went dead. I recharged my battery and my stereo's bass came back? That is weird. I have to reprogram my damn stereo now though. That sucks.

maybe this might open up the speed governor debate again

how the 1.8s (and now the mazda 3s) have it set at 118mph

and how the 2.0s didn't have one at that speed

but maybe ALL 2.0s have them at 140mph, even the msp and regular fs-de's

just not many people have touched that mark in a regular non turbo fs-de
